"The properties of the message have been changed" prompt when forwarding/replying in Outlook

When users open a message in its own window that has a pdf attachment and replies or forwards the message; when they close the original window, outlook prompts "The properties of the message <email_subject> have been changed. Want to save your changes to this message?"

Steps to recreate this issue:

  • Message must have pdf or txt attachment
  • Open the original message in its own window
  • Reply-to or forward the message
  • Closing original message that was previously opened in its own window

Attempts to disable add-ins or running outlook in safe-mode do not resolve this issue.

Hi All,

First, apologize for the inconvenience caused by this problem in Outlook Client. Microsoft has realized this issue and the dedicated outlook teams are working on this problem to fix it. It is a known issue in the current Outlook Clients, and a fix will be released to Office version 2106 on 2021/6/17. For the affected users please navigate to Outlook Web App as temporary workaround and wait for the new fix release with some more patience, thanks. For more details, please refer to "The properties of the message have been changed" prompt when forwarding/replying in Outlook.

Thanks for your understanding and patience.

Best Regards,

Oliver

    Our environment, on-prem Exchange 2019

I have come across the same issue for 1 user only and started about 4 weeks ago. I went through most of what has been suggested previously in this thread, with removing profiles, enabling disabling property flags, etc... which seemed to not fix anything.

I was able to find a fix, the desktop showed that it had adobe acrobat reader DC already, but I went and downloaded Adobe again (didnt remove any previous adobe).

After installing the recent Adobe Acrobat Reader DC, the user no longer has the issue and was able to mark it resolved.

Not sure if this will apply to anyone else or will work. But its an easy try.

    Hi all,

We escalated this issue to the Outlook Team and the root cause has been found. The bug is specific to Outlook Desktop and the fix will be in an upcoming update. The build that is going out today does not have the fix (Current Channel 2105 14026.20270). I expect the fix will be in the next major update after this. Once I know for sure the version of the fix and the estimated release date I will report back. I should have a better status update later today.

    Thank you !

I have noticed that I have this issue as well but I don't open my emails, I just preview them so it is not bothering me too much.

Many of my managers do so they can have many emails open for comparisons and such.

More and more are noticing they have the issue as they open their emails and not just preview them.

Just tested v2106 in the Preview Channel and the following issues are fixed. I was told by our CSM that it will be pushed out to Current Channel later today or tomorrow.

    1. Properties have changed save dialog on replies/forwards
    2. Meetings immediately saving when clicking New Meeting/Appointment, causes blank meetings.
    3. Unknown Error when trying forward some meetings

Waiting to verify if this issue has been resolved:

    1. Failed to upload attachments error: Failed to upload attachments to server (error 0x80070057).

    @Nick_AP,

Thank you for testing and validating the fixed build. I had not seen the other symptoms so need to monitor and test for those too.

The fix is getting checked into Current Channel today so it will still be some days before it goes out to CC. I have been communicating with folks internally about status and the CSM might have mistook my saying being checked in today or tomorrow as the day it would go to production. As soon as I know the fixed build and any ETA I will post back to the forum thread. I am also going to add this on the Outlook Known Issues page to have a formal tracking of status, Fixes or workarounds for recent issues in Outlook for PC - Outlook (microsoft.com).
