"The properties of the message have been changed" prompt when forwarding/replying in Outlook

When users open a message in its own window that has a pdf attachment and replies or forwards the message; when they close the original window, outlook prompts "The properties of the message <email_subject> have been changed. Want to save your changes to this message?"

Steps to recreate this issue:

  • Message must have pdf or txt attachment
  • Open the original message in its own window
  • Reply-to or forward the message
  • Closing original message that was previously opened in its own window

Attempts to disable add-ins or running outlook in safe-mode do not resolve this issue.

Hi All，

First, apologize for the inconvenience caused by this problem in Outlook Client. Microsoft has realized this issue and the dedicated outlook teams are working on this problem to fix it. It is a known issue in the current Outlook Clients, and a fix will be released to Office version 2106 on 2021/6/17. For the affected users please navigate to Outlook Web App as temporary workaround and wait for the new fix release with some more patience, thanks. For more details, please refer to "The properties of the message have been changed" prompt when forwarding/replying in Outlook.

    The issue started about 3 weeks ago with a small group and while the number of affected users is steadily growing, with a billion** outlook users, its a small group. It's not a widespread issue or the forums would be blowing up with multiple long threads.

    The solutions are all over the board... which makes it hard to repro and no repro makes it hard to fix.

    ** that's a wild guess. I figure 50% of office users also use outlook... with a fair number using older versions. I don't how many office users there are.

    We are having the same exact issue with a handful of users, On premise Exchange 2013 with Office 2019 MSO.

    When you open an email in a new window, you reply or forward this email. Then when you want to close the email you just replied to, it asks you to save changes while there are no changes. Super annoying to users. In our case it seems to happen mostly to HTML emails with attachments. Disabling outlook addons does not work. I should also note that this behavior started happening over night, no settings in Exchange or Outlook have been changed by IT department or users. This seems a Windows Update or Office update issue. I am sure this is a bug

    My users too are starting to blow up with this little problem.

    Started with 1 a couple of weeks ago and is steadily increasing and so on.

    Solutions work for the 1st item, and then breaks there after

    Does not happen when using webmail, removing all of the add ins does not affect it.

    office 365 pro apps, on prem exchange 2016 Nothing has been changed in the environment. Has to be an office update that is rolling out.
