"The properties of the message have been changed" prompt when forwarding/replying in Outlook

When users open a message in its own window that has a pdf attachment and replies or forwards the message; when they close the original window, outlook prompts "The properties of the message <email_subject> have been changed. Want to save your changes to this message?"

Steps to recreate this issue:

  • Message must have pdf or txt attachment
  • Open the original message in its own window
  • Reply-to or forward the message
  • Closing original message that was previously opened in its own window

Attempts to disable add-ins or running outlook in safe-mode do not resolve this issue.

Hi All,

First, apologize for the inconvenience caused by this problem in Outlook Client. Microsoft has realized this issue and the dedicated outlook teams are working on this problem to fix it. It is a known issue in the current Outlook Clients, and a fix will be released to Office version 2106 on 2021/6/17. For the affected users please navigate to Outlook Web App as temporary workaround and wait for the new fix release with some more patience, thanks. For more details, please refer to "The properties of the message have been changed" prompt when forwarding/replying in Outlook.

Thanks for your understanding and patience.

Best Regards,

Oliver

I wonder if this issue is related to the exchange version being used. Even if it is not 1:1 every user on a particular exchange version, it might be that it only occurs on certain versions. I am using Exchange 2013 shared on UK Fast. Can others experiencing this problem post their server versions please.

    We use exchange as well.

    Hi all,

For any of you that repro this issue and do not have the Adobe add-ins please submit a Contact Support ticket (Help, Contact Support). Not everyone has this option so please check just in case. Tenant Admins and Insiders should have this option in Outlook for Office 365. Below is what it looks like if you have this option.

We have traces with Adobe but need traces without to better isolate why this is happening.

We are having the same issue and so far, none of the solutions presented in this thread have been able to solve it for us. I am on Office 365 with an on-prem Exchange 2016 server (v 15.1.2176.2). One thing I have noticed is that upon closing and reopening Outlook, I am able to open one email and hit reply without the problem happening. it always starts after opening the second message. It also leaves a blank draft of each email I reply to in my Drafts folder. And when I close out of Outlook, I get the 'Do you want to save' dialog again for each email I already had the popup/problem with in that session.

I also noticed that there was an update to my Office 365 applied on 5/29/2021 - that pretty much lines up with when the issue started - Microsoft 365 Apps for Enterprise v 16.0.14026.20246

I have tried the registry fix as well as disabling all add-ons but nothing has fixed it.
