"The properties of the message have been changed" prompt when forwarding/replying in Outlook

When users open a message in its own window that has a pdf attachment and replies or forwards the message; when they close the original window, outlook prompts "The properties of the message <email_subject> have been changed. Want to save your changes to this message?"

Steps to recreate this issue:

  • Message must have pdf or txt attachment
  • Open the original message in its own window
  • Reply-to or forward the message
  • Closing original message that was previously opened in its own window

Attempts to disable add-ins or running outlook in safe-mode do not resolve this issue.

Hi All,

First, apologize for the inconvenience caused by this problem in Outlook Client. Microsoft has realized this issue and the dedicated outlook teams are working on this problem to fix it. It is a known issue in the current Outlook Clients, and a fix will be released to Office version 2106 on 2021/6/17. For the affected users please navigate to Outlook Web App as temporary workaround and wait for the new fix release with some more patience, thanks. For more details, please refer to "The properties of the message have been changed" prompt when forwarding/replying in Outlook.

Thanks for your understanding and patience.

Best Regards,

Oliver

What addins are installed in both Outlook and Word?

Try enabling the add properties to attachments to reply with changes option in the trust center, close the dialog, then reopen and disable it.

    Hey Diane,

Thank you for taking a crack at this. We do not have that specific addin. We have tried disabling all addins to no avail. That trust center attachment setting is not checked. I even tried enabling and then re-disabling it to see if that would have an effect, but this did not resolve the issue.

Surely this issue is above the local level, as 6 users on our network have confirmed they're having the same issue, which likely means a lot more are experiencing it and just not reporting.

Thanks again & God bless :)

    Hi Ankita,

Thank you for the quick response. I apologize for my delayed response, as I did not receive email notification that anyone had replied to my question.

I have confirmed all the settings you mentioned are set properly and ran a quick repair & disabled antivirus to not much avail. FYI, this is occurring with multiple users (6 confirmed, likely more) in our organization, so I assure you this issue is not isolated to my machine. Here is screen-shot of Office account page:

Thank you & God bless :)

Are you using the Adobe Send and Track addin?

Do you have the option enabled to add properties to attachments to reply with changes in File > Options > Trust Center Attachment handling.
