"The properties of the message have been changed" prompt when forwarding/replying in Outlook

When users open a message in its own window that has a pdf attachment and replies or forwards the message; when they close the original window, outlook prompts "The properties of the message <email_subject> have been changed. Want to save your changes to this message?"

Steps to recreate this issue:

  • Message must have pdf or txt attachment
  • Open the original message in its own window
  • Reply-to or forward the message
  • Closing original message that was previously opened in its own window

Attempts to disable add-ins or running outlook in safe-mode do not resolve this issue.

Hi All,

First, apologize for the inconvenience caused by this problem in Outlook Client. Microsoft has realized this issue and the dedicated outlook teams are working on this problem to fix it. It is a known issue in the current Outlook Clients, and a fix will be released to Office version 2106 on 2021/6/17. For the affected users please navigate to Outlook Web App as temporary workaround and wait for the new fix release with some more patience, thanks. For more details, please refer to "The properties of the message have been changed" prompt when forwarding/replying in Outlook.

Thanks for your understanding and patience.

Best Regards,

Oliver

The issue started about 3 weeks ago with a small group and while the number of affected users is steadily growing, with a billion** outlook users, its a small group. It's not a widespread issue or the forums would be blowing up with multiple long threads.

The solutions are all over the board... which makes it hard to repro and no repro makes it hard to fix.

** that's a wild guess. I figure 50% of office users also use outlook... with a fair number using older versions. I don't how many office users there are.

This issue has nothing to do with the updates…. This problem started to me yesterday and I run the updates just today…..

All my coworkers have this same issue so I don’t understand how Microsoft claims that this issue is related to a just small group of users

I also have a about 5 users that have the problem....likely more tomorrow. Note: This pop-up only occurs with HTML formated emails...not Rich Text or Text formated emails.

Also, I was NOT having the problem with Outlook, so I ran Windows Updates today (6/8/21), then restarted...guess what...now I have the problem. I then uninstalled all of the updates I could, but that did not help. The one that I could not uninstall was the Servicing Stack 10.0.190041.1022. That is the only one left that was installed today. A Microsoft Update is definanely the cause, just like the last four Office problems.

Microsoft... Please test your updates more completely (via test customers group)...this is the 4th major Office bug in less than one year. Please improve your quality control and testing. Microsoft, please release a fix this bug as soon as possible. There appears to be no other way to fix this.

Environment: On-prem Exchange 2013, Outlook 2016 and 2019 (Office Pro local versions). I have not noticed any M365 problems yet, but that will probably change later this week if they get the update and restart.

    Thanks,

    dspilker

Just did the Office update and just started getting this message. This is an update issue not a user issue.
