"The properties of the message have been changed" prompt when forwarding/replying in Outlook

When users open a message in its own window that has a pdf attachment and replies or forwards the message; when they close the original window, outlook prompts "The properties of the message <email_subject> have been changed. Want to save your changes to this message?"

Steps to recreate this issue:

  • Message must have pdf or txt attachment
  • Open the original message in its own window
  • Reply-to or forward the message
  • Closing original message that was previously opened in its own window

Attempts to disable add-ins or running outlook in safe-mode do not resolve this issue.

Hi All,

First, apologize for the inconvenience caused by this problem in Outlook Client. Microsoft has realized this issue and the dedicated outlook teams are working on this problem to fix it. It is a known issue in the current Outlook Clients, and a fix will be released to Office version 2106 on 2021/6/17. For the affected users please navigate to Outlook Web App as temporary workaround and wait for the new fix release with some more patience, thanks. For more details, please refer to "The properties of the message have been changed" prompt when forwarding/replying in Outlook.

Thanks for your understanding and patience.

Best Regards,

Oliver

    Our environment, on-prem Exchange 2019

I have come across the same issue for 1 user only and started about 4 weeks ago. I went through most of what has been suggested previously in this thread, with removing profiles, enabling disabling property flags, etc... which seemed to not fix anything.

I was able to find a fix, the desktop showed that it had adobe acrobat reader DC already, but I went and downloaded Adobe again (didnt remove any previous adobe).

After installing the recent Adobe Acrobat Reader DC, the user no longer has the issue and was able to mark it resolved.

Not sure if this will apply to anyone else or will work. But its an easy try.

    Hi all,

We escalated this issue to the Outlook Team and the root cause has been found. The bug is specific to Outlook Desktop and the fix will be in an upcoming update. The build that is going out today does not have the fix (Current Channel 2105 14026.20270). I expect the fix will be in the next major update after this. Once I know for sure the version of the fix and the estimated release date I will report back. I should have a better status update later today.

Users at my organization are reporting a similar problem.

Our environment is using On-Premise Exchange (which was updated over the weekend) with user clients ranging from Outlook 2013 to Outlook 2019, most users are using the most recent, or close to most recent release of Outlook for their respective versions as updates are enabled for all users.

The popup occurs only after starting a reply or forward for an email, for emails with and without attachments, but only for HTML messages.

The issue is not being caused by plugins, and is reproduced even when starting the program in safe mode using Win + R "outlook.exe /safe".

I have tried clearing the registry and the Trust Center option "Add properties to attachments to enable Reply with Changes" is not selected.

The only workaround I've found so far is to use the reading pane and reply or forward emails with that. Since reading pane does not open the email in a new window, the window does not need to be closed, thus the pop-up will not occur. Note if users enable reading pane but still double click their emails to open them, then the popup will still be there.
