"The properties of the message have been changed" prompt when forwarding/replying in Outlook

When users open a message in its own window that has a pdf attachment and replies or forwards the message; when they close the original window, outlook prompts "The properties of the message <email_subject> have been changed. Want to save your changes to this message?"

Steps to recreate this issue:

  • Message must have pdf or txt attachment
  • Open the original message in its own window
  • Reply-to or forward the message
  • Closing original message that was previously opened in its own window

Attempts to disable add-ins or running outlook in safe-mode do not resolve this issue.

Hi All,

First, apologize for the inconvenience caused by this problem in Outlook Client. Microsoft has realized this issue and the dedicated outlook teams are working on this problem to fix it. It is a known issue in the current Outlook Clients, and a fix will be released to Office version 2106 on 2021/6/17. For the affected users please navigate to Outlook Web App as temporary workaround and wait for the new fix release with some more patience, thanks. For more details, please refer to "The properties of the message have been changed" prompt when forwarding/replying in Outlook.

Thanks for your understanding and patience.

Best Regards,

Oliver

We have a client which doesn't use Adobe Addins, but preliminary testing points to a Teams Meeting Addin issue. Disabling seems to work. Bitness of Teams and Office is x86 by the way. Version of MS-Teams is 1.4.00.7174 X86 (with Meeting Add-in version 1.0.20339.4). Anybody else with this?

i'm having the exact issue using the exact re-created process.

    outlook 16.0.14026.20202

downgraded to 16.0.13929.20222 (13929.20296) and it still happens.

tried 13929.20372 and it is still happening.

also noticed if i open the email and hit reply or forward then close that window it will auto create a blank email in draft.

compared options to another machine with the same version 13929.20372 all options are exact.

creating a new profile does not fix this problem.

I'm having the exact same issue with a few users.

recreated the Outlook profile, recreated the user profile, tried Outlook in safe mode and always the same error message when forwarding or replying to messages.

    Hi Ankita,

Thank you for the quick response. I apologize for my delayed response, as I did not receive email notification that anyone had replied to my question.

I have confirmed all the settings you mentioned are set properly and ran a quick repair & disabled antivirus to not much avail. FYI, this is occurring with multiple users (6 confirmed, likely more) in our organization, so I assure you this issue is not isolated to my machine. Here is screen-shot of Office account page:

Thank you & God bless :)
