"The properties of the message have been changed" prompt when forwarding/replying in Outlook

When users open a message in its own window that has a pdf attachment and replies or forwards the message; when they close the original window, outlook prompts "The properties of the message <email_subject> have been changed. Want to save your changes to this message?"

Steps to recreate this issue:

  • Message must have pdf or txt attachment
  • Open the original message in its own window
  • Reply-to or forward the message
  • Closing original message that was previously opened in its own window

Attempts to disable add-ins or running outlook in safe-mode do not resolve this issue.

Hi All,

First, apologize for the inconvenience caused by this problem in Outlook Client. Microsoft has realized this issue and the dedicated outlook teams are working on this problem to fix it. It is a known issue in the current Outlook Clients, and a fix will be released to Office version 2106 on 2021/6/17. For the affected users please navigate to Outlook Web App as temporary workaround and wait for the new fix release with some more patience, thanks. For more details, please refer to "The properties of the message have been changed" prompt when forwarding/replying in Outlook.

Thanks for your understanding and patience.

Best Regards,

Oliver

In addition to Replies in new windows automatically saving a blank draft, I am also getting automatic saves when drafting a new appointment in the calendar.

    Right click > New Appointment
After a few seconds a notification comes up saying I have a overdue appointment, and it is blank. Then there is a blank entry saved on my calendar before I even start typing the entry.

Can anyone else with this Reply/Forward issue (draft creation/properties changing notification) confirm this happening?

Registry fix worked until the end of the day. User is now experiencing the same issue.

Correct, the key gets updated during the day. You can use a reg file to delete that key every day (or before every restart).

My organization has so far only one user with this issue which as far as I know started today. I've tried a few of these tricks and it hasn't changed anything.

    Office version: 2105 (Build 14026.20246 Click-to-Run)

    Exchange version: 2013.

After some testing, I came to the conclusion that plaintext emails are unaffected by this issue. HTML-formatted emails are, whether there are attachments or not.
