Outlook 2016 - Save Multiple Attachments not saving to Network Drives

I recently updated a user from Office 2010 to Office 2016 through Office 365, soon after the update, the user informed me that they were no longer able to use the "Save Multiple Attachments" feature in Outlook to save multiple attachments to a Network location.

This method can save files to a Local drive without an issue, but will not save to a Mapped Network folder. I have tested this on two other computers, both in a different environment, with the same results.

Files can be saved individually, even through the Save Multiple Attachments dialogue, it is only when attempting to save 2 or more files simultaneously. I'm hoping someone knows of a solution to this issue as this user can receive upwards of 10+ attachments in a single email for a project that they need to make available to a project folder.

They did not have this issue prior to the upgrade. Any thoughts or recommendations would be appreciated.

Hi Angela,

No, right now the issue is still being investigated and there are two workarounds described in the following article, you can keep monitoring it to get the latest update about it.

  1. Save the documents to your own computer, and then copy them to the shared network drive.
  2. Save the documents one at a time to the shared network drive.

Hi All,

I totally understand the inconvenience this thing may cause you. Our related team are currently working on this issue. As workarounds, you can save the attachments one by one or revert to an earlier version. Your time and understanding will be highly appreciated.

Best Regards,

Iry

Most of the tests I've run have been with devices using Sophos Central, again completely up-to-date and the current version (Core Agent/Endpoint Standard 11.5.10). Though I did have a device test with no anti-virus as I wanted to make sure it wasn't a conflicting software issue.

I can also confirm the behavior is exactly as Rene has described.

    Hi Jonathon,

Since you can save multiple attachments to local drives, and can also save from OWA. Thus, the issue should be related to network location or the method of storage for external memory device. I recommend you to contact the support of the mapped drives for further assistance.

Besides, if you want to save multiple attachments to network location, you can try to save your attachments to OneDrive as a workaround.

    Thanks for your understanding,

    Iry

Yesterday evening I tested this on my home network, using my Home Workgroup, saving from one computer, to another computer in the same workgroup. No Domain Controller, no servers, only two computers on the same internal network. The exact same result occurred of the files not saving.

The issue isn't saving to Mapped Drives, the issue is saving to a Network Location. Any Network Location. It doesn't matter if it is Windows internal sharing, a NAS, a Mapped Drive, a SAN or a Server. All that matters is that it is a folder location not physically tied to the device doing the saving.

As Rene mentioned in one of his posts, previous versions of Office 2016 did not have this issue, it began occurring sometime recently, I did not have a user using this functionality on Office 2016 until 2 weeks ago, so I can not confirm that.

As in my case, I have tested this across devices using various version of Windows, including server versions, fresh installations, etc... it doesn't matter. I've been providing IT support for nearly 20 years, I have tracked this issue to what I can identify as a single point of failure, and that is Outlook 2016.

As for using OneDrive, that would be a great solution, if I had my 500+ users all trained on the nuances of OneDrive, but I don't, that isn't planned for rollout until Q2 of next year until AFTER we get everyone onto Windows 10 and are able to use online only syncing to reduce the amount of storage used. I can't very well equipped all my users computers with 4TB harddrives to sync everything they may need locally.

In the meantime, this is not an isolated or unique incident, it just so happens that the situation is outside of the general use-case and would only apply to someone using the exact situation of saving multiple attachments simultaneously to a network location from Outlook 2016.
