Outlook 2016 - Save Multiple Attachments not saving to Network Drives

I recently updated a user from Office 2010 to Office 2016 through Office 365, soon after the update, the user informed me that they were no longer able to use the "Save Multiple Attachments" feature in Outlook to save multiple attachments to a Network location.

This method can save files to a Local drive without an issue, but will not save to a Mapped Network folder. I have tested this on two other computers, both in a different environment, with the same results.

Files can be saved individually, even through the Save Multiple Attachments dialogue, it is only when attempting to save 2 or more files simultaneously. I'm hoping someone knows of a solution to this issue as this user can receive upwards of 10+ attachments in a single email for a project that they need to make available to a project folder.

They did not have this issue prior to the upgrade. Any thoughts or recommendations would be appreciated.

Hi Angela,

No, right now the issue is still being investigated and there are two workarounds described in the following article, you can keep monitoring it to get the latest update about it.

  1. Save the documents to your own computer, and then copy them to the shared network drive.
  2. Save the documents one at a time to the shared network drive.

Hi All,

I totally understand the inconvenience this thing may cause you. Our related team are currently working on this issue. As workarounds, you can save the attachments one by one or revert to an earlier version. Your time and understanding will be highly appreciated.

Best Regards,

Iry

Most of the tests I've run have been with devices using Sophos Central, again completely up-to-date and the current version (Core Agent/Endpoint Standard 11.5.10). Though I did have a device test with no anti-virus as I wanted to make sure it wasn't a conflicting software issue.

I can also confirm the behavior is exactly as Rene has described.

I agree, testing the issue with OWA might be interesting but since OWA is a entirely different animal than outlook.exe it is not really relevant.

I've also tested different servers and shares and it occurs at two different locations and domain/workgroups and it all makes no difference. Likewise with SMBv1 disabled or not on servers.

The issue is with outlook 2016 when saving multiple attachments. The 'select folder to save to' dialog let's you select a folder on a mapped network drive of UNC share but after the [OK] the dialog closes but the attachments have not been saved. It also happened that the [OK] is ignored and the dialog remains open until [Cancel] is clikced (as if the folder still has to be selected).

We use Outlook 2016 build 1711 on Windows 10 pro 1709 with all recent updates in combination with eSET NOD32 v11.0.159 antivirus software (also an add-in in Outlook).

Jonathan: which AV software do you use?

The issue presents regardless of Network location. I have attempted multiple locations within the same Mapped Drive, as well as multiple Mapped Drives. I have tried folders with no access restrictions and folders with limited access.

Downloading from OWA works just fine to a Network Location, however is a completely different process as it is the browser in use that is downloading and saving the file, and also generates the files into a ZIP folder. The issue presents only inside Outlook 2016 from my tests, and only in this specific situation.

As I mentioned before, if I use the "Save Multiple Attachments" option, but only select one file, it saves as expected, it is only when having more than a single file selected that the file does not save. There is no error, nothing shows in the event logs that I have found, the files just never appear in the specified location.
