I am constantly getting these popup window alerts for my Outlook for Mac 2011 every few minutes"

"Outlook cannot find the server. Verify the server information is entered correctly in the Account Settings, and that your DNS settings in the Network pane of System Preferences are correct."

How do I correct this issue??

Hi RSSrsvp,

Here’re the steps to flush DNS in Mac:

  • Step 1: Open the Terminal
    • Navigate to Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal
  • Step 2: Flush DNS - Type the following command and hit enter.
    • Mac OS X Yosemite and later
      sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder
      • Mac OS X Yosemite v10.10 through v10.10.3

sudo discoveryutil mdnsflushcache - Mac OS X Mavericks, Mountain Lion and Lion

sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder - Mac OS X Snow Leopard

sudo dscacheutil -flushcache

Thanks,

Brook

    Hi RSSrsvp,

We have received the private message you sent, based on which we notice that the test account encounters the issue too. The error message says the username/password or security settings may be incorrect.

We see that the settings in your Outlook for Mac 2011 are the same as my example illustrated above, from which we can identity that security settings are right. And the username/password are also correct as I’m able to use them to log in with both Outlook for Mac 2011 and a web browser.

With this collected information, we can be confident that there is no error with this version of Outlook. It’s not a bug of the application. The issue is related to your network environment or your Mac or this specific Outlook for Mac 2011.

Another interesting thing, from the screenshot in private message, we notice there’s another Outlook.com account set up in the Outlook and it seems fine (based on the dot collar). Could you please let us know more about this?

In addition, have you tried to flush the DNS cache in the Mac?

    Thanks,

    Brook

    Hi RSSrsvp,

Sorry for this. We incorrectly thought you’re using Office 365 subscriptions, by which you can get the Office 2016 for free. Now we understand that the Office 2011 you own is a one-time purchase version.

In my lab, the OS version is 10.12.3. The Outlook version is the same as yours:

I don’t encounter the issue setting up my Outlook.com account in it.

So we can conclude that this is not a software related issue. From my experience, the issue is related to the specific Mac or Network DNS settings.

We understand that you have already performed a test account we provided before, but we still appreciate it if you could give another test account a shot. I have sent the credentials in a private message with the subject "Test account information": https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/privatemessages/list/.

Open terminal > run sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder to flush DNS in your Mac.

Besides, please use another Network outside your corporate network such as Coffee bar, another wifi network to perform a test.

If available, we suggest you perform a test in another Mac which is located in another network.

    Thanks,

    Brook

    Hi RSRSSrsvp,

The mainstream support of Microsoft Outlook for Mac will be ended this October. Actually, Office 365 is always designed with the latest versions of Office software. Could you please give the Outlook for Mac 2016 a shot?

You don’t need to uninstall the 2011 software. Just login to office 365 and download the 2016 installation file to install it.

    Thanks,

    Brook

    Hi Brooke,

Let me understand what you are recommending as a fix for your buggy software. I have to either sign up for Office 365 which is $99.99 a year or for Office for Mac 2016 which is $229 when I already paid for and own Office for Mac 2011, is that what you are instructing me to do?

Why should I pay one penny more when MS cannot fix their own bugs?
