Outlook 2016 - chinese characters appearing in messages when replying/forwarding

Hello,

I am investigating an issue with Outlook 2016 and seemingly random appearances of chinese characters in email messages when replying or forwarding. I have a Exchange 365 hybrid environment and O365 pro plus office installed on workstations.

I have not been able to pinpoint a common factor why or when this happens. It is possible to reproduce the issue by sending a plain text message to a O365 group and then reply/forward the same message > header information is transformed into "chinese" (I have no idea what they actually are) characters. This does not happen with all groups or senders which is why I am looking into Outlook at the moment.

I`ve tried to change Outlook settings: use UTF8 with mailto protocol, change the encoding settings to different options etc. without success.

I`d like to hear how would you start to troubleshoot this issue?

BR,

Sam

If you can create an email which is 100% guaranteed to fail then do that and keep it first as your test email.

In Outlook go to "File" to open Account Information.

    At the bottom select "Options".

    Select "Add-Ins"

Under the section "Active Application Add-Ins" you should see: McAfee AddIn.  The location (on our pcs) was "C:\Program Files\Mcafee\MSK\mskola64.dll (but if you have a 32bit os or a different set up this path may be a bit different) and the type is "COM Add-In".

At the bottom of this dialogue box there should be section "Manage" where you select COM Add-Ins" from the drop down and hit "Go".

In the next box you can disable "McAfee Addin" by unticking it.

On the Add-Ins screen the McAfee add in should now be in the "Inactive Application Add-Ins" section.

OK everything and go back out.  Close down Outlook.  Re-start and check.  If you have a test email then try that and see if it is now OK.  If for some reason the setting reverts, which may be due to a McAfee update re-setting the Add-in to active, you will need to re-do it, but we havent had to at all.

The above is the way to do it for Outlook Office 365, but it will be pretty well the same for older Outlook versions.

This has worked 100% for us and does not disable any of the McAfee security side - it only disables the footer banner which seems to cause the issue.  There is a thread in the Mcafee support forum which brings this to their attention, but I haven't had a chance to chase it up (I think I put the link to it in my earlier post).

As always, YMMV, Back up before Screw up, Be kind to animals, etc, etc..

Thank you also C3SD - and yes, I did noticed that McAfee blurb at the end of the messages but since it was "McAfee" I took it as an improvement of the system.

In any case, as I was answering El Burgo, I unfortunately have no idea as to how to disable that add-on so again, I thank you all out there for helping an old retired guy, thanks.

    BeRo_52_CH,

Will you be able to figure out what to do based on El Burgo's reply?  In a nutshell, you don't need to turn off your entire McAfee protection system.  Rather, there is one component that seems to be causing the problem.  You may notice the footer at the bottom of your emails that says the message has been scanned by McAfee.  That's the piece you need to disable.  I turned off all email scanning for my system, and the Chinese character problem stopped.  I'm not sure how to turn off only one add-in like El Burgo suggested.  But maybe El Burgo can provide us with some additional guidance.  Thank you El Burgo.

Thank you C3SD - Yes I do have McAfee and no, haven't tried that, but if I disable my anti-virus system then I lose any protection I have with anti-virus system.  Is this problem directly related to the McAfee anti-virus program and isn't there any other solution to this problem than disabling the system ?

It's only the comm add in for outlook which creates a footer saying the email has been scanned by McAfee you need to disable. Everything else remains so you won't lose any protection.
