Why does Outlook launch IE in the background?

Hello,

We are using Office 365 ProPlus on Windows 10 Pro.  Opening Outlook (16.0.7927.1020) will launch two background processes of IE (iexplore.exe).  Why does Outlook open IE?  

This behavior does not happen in earlier versions of Office 365 ProPlus, such as 16.0.6001.1041.  It appears that an update for Office 365 ProPlus is causing Outlook to open IE in the background.

    Is there an update for this? This obviously happens to everyone and we have been forced to rollback and keep our employees on the old version. We are getting more and more complaints about features they want to use in the newer versions.

    Sara, I have given up on Microsoft fixing this issue. After I install 2016, I disable updates, and run a batch script to roll back to the last known version that doesn't have this issue. Stability is much more important to us than whatever marginal new features there may be in the newer versions. 

    This is pretty frustrating.  I have been facing this same issue for a while.  It is now 2018.  Is MSFT planning to release a patch soon or not?

    Has there been any movement on this? any new information? any heads up this is a bug? any news an update will be pushed to resolve? 

    Please give us something. All we can say is "We're waiting on Microsoft to figure it out and have no idea where they are with their troubleshooting or resolution and haven't been able to provide any recent updates on the issue."  

    Any ideas that do not include rolling back updates for Office? something? 

    Any kind of update on progress would be greatly appreciated.

    I have the same issue:

    • Windows 7
    • MS Office 2016
    • When I open Outlook 2016, the iexplorer.exe and iexplorer.exe 32 open in the background (no interface)
    • Until this issue is fixed, I removed Internet explorer with "Turn Windows feature on or off"
    • I think starting iexplorer with Outlook is linked to the Outlook message option "If there are problems with how this message is displayed, click here to view it in a web browser" since the only way I can view a message in the browser is by having Internet Explorer installed. This feature does not work with my default browse (Firefox 64bit). The feature works with Firefox 32 bit.

    -In default programs, it is not possible to set Firefox as default program for .MHT files (format for HTML browser emails). Outlook 2016 therefore needs another browser to display emails in browser
