Why does Outlook launch IE in the background?

Hello,

We are using Office 365 ProPlus on Windows 10 Pro.  Opening Outlook (16.0.7927.1020) will launch two background processes of IE (iexplore.exe).  Why does Outlook open IE?

This behavior does not happen in earlier versions of Office 365 ProPlus, such as 16.0.6001.1041.  It appears that an update for Office 365 ProPlus is causing Outlook to open IE in the background.

Thank you,

Evan

I have clients also reporting this issue. We put them all on current channel and updated them. Of the people in our office only 4 have reported the issue and all are on Windows 8.1, using Office2016, Office365 Enterprise E3 license types.

In our case the characteristic is two FULL Internet Explorer windows open on the close of Outlook. Most of the time the windows open with no error and just open to the IE home page that is set.

I am writing this off to our client as a known issue/bug with a recent office update and awaiting resolution from Microsoft Support.

I hope this information helps in the quest to push a resolution.

I see this thread shows updated August 21st, yet the issue STILL persists. We are now up to version 1707 8326.2073, and it is STILL NOT FIXED.

Is there any ETA as to when this will be resolved? Thank you.

    Alan,

I must agree with later posts that this is not helpful information.

That Outlook 2016 did not start Internet Explorer processes in the past and now it does screams that this is either some bad coding OR that it is intentional. If intentional, respectfully, that is a stupid thing to do.

A system where IE has been uninstalled does not have this issue for obvious reasons and there is no other browser that is being opened in lieu of IE.

If you are capable of finding the real answer, even if the answer is an admission of a bug that is being worked on, then the community can at least hope to wait for that. Otherwise, please let us know the 'you don't know' and we can all start looking elsewhere for help.

    Dom

Alan, it has been over a month since this issue was reported. Furthermore, I see there is an updated version, 1705, for 2016. Yet, the problem persists. Is there any ETA as to when this will be resolved? Thank you.
