Outlook.com Moving Addresses From Bcc Field to the TO Field When Email is Sent via Desktop Email Client

I am using and have been using "Postbox", a desktop email client, to send and receive all my emails through my Live account on "Outlook.com" using IMAP. Everything has worked perfectly between "Postbox" and "Outlook.com" for several years and I haven't changed anything on my end. About two weeks ago, I started having problems. Now, when I put a single name or a group list into the Bcc field on my "Postbox" desktop email client and send that email through my outgoing SMTP server at "Outlook.com", the email goes through "Outlook.com" and "Outlook.com" moves all the names from the Bcc field to the TO field. I am assuming this has something to do with the new changes associated with the updated "Outlook.com/Outlook Mail" web mail process.

Notes:

  1. When I do the same thing using "Gmail" for my outgoing SMTP server, my names stay in the Bcc field as they should.
  2. My Outlook.com web page now shows Outlook Mail in the top left corner.
  3. I am using imap-mail.outlook.com Port 993 and smtp-mail.outlook.com Port 587 for my servers. I tried switching to imap-mail.live.com and smtp-mail.live.com as one MS web site suggested regarding the new changes to Outlook Mail but those new setting would not connect.
  4. I tried using Mozilla Thunderbird instead of Postbox as my desktop email client and the same problem occurred in that the name in my outgoing Bcc field was put into the To field after the email was processed through Outlook.com.
  5. Based on all of the above, I believe the problem has something to do with the way the new Outlook Mail is trying to process names from the Bcc field in emails sent from my desktop email clients.

I hope someone from MS can look into this problem and get back to us.

Thank you for the thorough feedback Laurel. The post-mortem investigation (as we call it) into the support escalation is underway.

Glad that the fix has reached you. For John and everyone else, the fix has reached about 75% of servers now. There will be a long tail of stragglers but we are working to reach 100% by the end of next week.

Regards,

Sean

Dont expect an answer "shortly" but I have pushed this uphill until it reached someone who may have an answer.

You have done your due diligence, posted in a concise and easy to follow thread, the least I can do is become the squeaky wheel.  Alas I am still but a small cog in the machine.

I would be happy to pass your email to them should you be inclined.  If so use the email address on my profile page and I will run it up the flag pole.

Were I in my day job I could fix this before coffee but alas I feel like Sisyphus here

THANKS!!!!!!!!!   Your assistance will make a difference. That is all I can ask.

Every time I try to report this problem through normal free channels at Microsoft, the support person keeps telling me I have to pay a fee to communicate with Microsoft support personnel or I need to use this forum to resolve my issues for free.

I appreciate your help and I will keep my fingers crossed.

    Disclaimer

I am but a volunteer here

I have been following your thread since its inception.  This is a peer to peer site staffed mostly by volunteers who have little or no contact to MS.

Because of your extensive testing I have escalated this to someone who MIGHT be able to help.

It is up to MS how this is dealt with.

    Woodg:

I thank you for asking - Yes I have. But, who knows when it will be addressed.

I am hoping for several things in the meantime by posting on this forum:

    1. That I can help identify results and findings for other people who are having the same problems so they have a better understanding of what is going on and why it is happening to them. That way they can make a decision about how they want to proceed.
    2. In hopes that someone reading this forum might come up with some workable solutions in the interim until Microsoft fixes the bug or non-Microsoft desktop email program vendors (e.g. Mailbird, Postbox, Thunderbird) update their products to use Microsoft Exchange. I know I can change my outgoing SMTP to use another email service provider such as Gmail to send my emails. But, some of us want to keep using our Outlook.com, Live.com, Hotmail.com and MSN.com email addresses to get responses.
    3. Maybe some of the Microsoft Forum Moderators and MVPs might understand the seriousness of this problem and use their influence to communicate with Microsoft Technical Support personnel to get the problem resolved sooner.
