Outlook app on Android - "An Error Occurred" when trying to setup my account

Hello all,

Would appreciate your thoughts on the following situation:

I just installed the Outlook App on my Galaxy S5 phone (Android 6).

When I start it, I get prompted for an email address so I enter my work email (Office 365) and after a few seconds it looks like something comes up and then get dumped back to the "Get Started" screen with the most helpful error message in human history:

"An Error Occurred"

Wow! Where to begin?

I cannot make it past this screen to access any settings or options of any kind.

Guess what - the OWA app for Android works fine, but it doesn't have WEAR capability unlike the Outlook app.

Any suggestions/assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks for sharing this post. It works for me. But, I have one more step for corporates outlook.

    1/ Disabled the Microsoft Authenticator App battery optimization option > Setting > Stay logged in > turn off

    2/ Disabled the Intune Company Portal App battery optimization option > Setting > Battery Optimization > turn off

    3/ Logged in from Outlook with the same corporate e-mail (with success.

    I need to turn off battery optimization both apps to get Outlook signed successfully.

    After trying dozens of solutions without success, this is what finally worked for me : 

    Simply uninstall Microsoft Authenticator app !!

    What a stupid bug...

    The year is now 2020 and this occurred on one of my colleagues Android phone.

    We were able to resolve by going into Android phone settings > Accounts and back up > accounts > work account > deleting work account

    After deleting the work account my colleague was able to go back into the Outlook app and log into her Outlook account

    I wish I'd seen your answer earlier, that solved it for me too. :)

    I had the same symptom, but it looks like it might have multiple causes.

    It started with one of my organisation's workers not being able to check emails in Outlook mobile on Android (Samsung Galaxy A20). It asked her to 'sign in' but each time she did it just glitched (no error, just stopped trying and then asked to sign in again). Restarted phone.

    I tried resetting the account, removing the account, clearing cache & data in Outlook.

    Outlook up-to-date with the latest 

    Outlook is required by our InTune policy so I didn't try uninstalling it.

    It turns out she couldn't sign in to ANY Microsoft 365 app - OneDrive, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Office Lens, getting a similar error each time. I tried various suggestions from here but none worked.

    The solution that worked for me (I think this only applies to devices managed through InTune):

    In the phone's Settings app under 'Accounts', there was a 'Work account'. I removed that acccount, then was able to sign into all the Microsoft 365 accounts again, and the 'Work account' appeared back by itself too after re-signing in.
