Outlook app on Android - "An Error Occurred" when trying to setup my account

Hello all,

Would appreciate your thoughts on the following situation:

I just installed the Outlook App on my Galaxy S5 phone (Android 6).

When I start it, I get prompted for an email address so I enter my work email (Office 365) and after a few seconds it looks like something comes up and then get dumped back to the "Get Started" screen with the most helpful error message in human history:

"An Error Occurred"

Wow! Where to begin?

I cannot make it past this screen to access any settings or options of any kind.

Guess what - the OWA app for Android works fine, but it doesn't have WEAR capability unlike the Outlook app.

Any suggestions/assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

Pete

Had the same issue. Frustrating! And no help anywhere.

Have an Android Phone and Office 365.

Uninstalled all Office 365 Apps and re-installed, rebooted phone many times. Tried adding new Accounts in Phone settings. Then, when adding an Office 365 account to Android, got a message "have to do it via one of the Microsoft apps on the phone". (Obviously not the Outlook App as we experienced.) So, tried Word, and was able to add Office 365 Account via Word. But then got an actual helpful error! It said to update the app on my phone called "Android System Web View App". And gave a link to update it. So, updated this app, again rebooted the phone, and then went back to setting up Word with Office 365 again (basically, signing into Office 365 via Word). Once I was in Office 365 on Word, I opened Outlook. Voila, all my emails are there and syncing.

Another thing to note is that before all this resolved I was seeing a syncing error in Outlook account (Phone settings - Accounts). It said "Sync is currently experiencing problems. It will be back shortly." Unfortunately, that error is still there, but email is synced and up to date. So, hopefully that fixes itself.

What a mess! Wish Microsoft provided better support for all this for sure! Especially when you pay a monthly fee for Office 365!

Thanks for getting back to me.

Not sure if I am supposed to give out my email on a "public" forum, so am reluctant to do so.

Tried option 3 - uninstalled and re-installed with no change - I could see some text come up but then the screen was replaced by the "Getting Started" one and the "An error occurred" message. Just wish I would have been able to read was on the screen that appeared just before it to maybe shed some light on the matter. Tried to setup my Virgin Media account (blueyonder) and this worked fine, so have the feeling its my work email address that is the problem and yet OWA for Android had no issues. I'm going to speak to someone at work to see if they can try the same steps as I have in order to rule out a one-off before proceeding further.

Again, thanks for getting back to me so quickly.

    Pete

If you have the authenticator app just remove it

    YES!!!!

I cannot believe that this was all it took, and how incompetent MS support has been, I have opened various support cases through the app, and just got brushed off, very poor MS form here. Hope they have added this into their support db!!!

Uninstalling and reinstalling Outlook makes no difference.

We've recently switched to )365, and 3 of our 50-odd users have this issue. They have exactly the same model phones, running the same version of Android and the same apps as others that don't have this issue.

Can I suggest forum moderators actually bother to read

    a) the description of the issue and

    b) all replies throughout the thread?

That way we can all avoid being bombarded by the same suggestions that others have indicated doesn't work.

Similar issue.  I've used Outlook on my Android phone and tablet for some time to access my company account, and loved it.  But, several weeks ago, after making a routine required password change on my company account, I could no longer access Office 365 on my Android devices using the Android Outlook app (although it can still be accessed through a web browser).  MS Outlook online support was totally useless.  They advised deleting the account and setting it back up.  When I try to set the account back up, I input my user name and it says "redirecting to company website", whereon the next thing I see is a pop up that says "an error occurred".   Two attempts to resolve this with Outlook online support were futile.  Both times, after a few things were tried, I was told the issue needed to be kicked up to a higher level and I would be recontacted.  I never was.  I was also told at one point that it was an administrative issue in my company.  It is not.  One of the IT guys in my company told me this is a known bug in Outlook.  It occurs when passwords are changed, has affected many people, and he knew of no fix.  Apparently, somehow the old passwords are stored somewhere.  Then, when passwords are changed, it creates this problem.   This was not an issue in the past, but recently has become one.  The solution we found was to set up the account in my phone's Samsung email app through Exchange.  It works, but not as well as using the proprietary Outlook app.  Not the best solution, but until MS bellies up and fixes this problem with the Outlook app and Office365, it's the only way I can get work related emails and appointments on my phone.

MS, please fix this bug in your app!
