I use to think that the Exchange account trick, for syncing Hotmail contacts, was fine up until recently where I discovered that already existing contacts that I had edited did not sync... only newly created contacts will be synced with Hotmail
/ Outlook / Live.
Bummer. Not sure what's going on, but this contact sync issue has droven me bunkers. Not quite sure what to do with it anymore. Getting the contacts onto the device is fine, but real 2-way syncing is just not happening.
mixednutts,
Please read my post here...

Do you think this is the pattern/problem you are having? Joined contacts are when Android combines 2 or more contacts together into a single contact. This will happen automatically if 2 or more contacts have the same phone number (and maybe under other circumstances).
In Outlook there will be 2 contacts (for example) but when initially synced to android only one contact is created combining the information of the 2 Outlook contacts. In my experience syncing will continue to work until an edit happens to any contact so described.
After that it's no go until you delete the account in android and start over.
Thanks for replying, Danny. I have tried removing and re-adding the account both recently and in the past. The behavior remains the same. Tried this with a few different firmwares for the device as well, however, all were Android 4.1.2.
For some reason I do remember it working in the past, but it may have have been running a different Android version such as 4.0.3 (ICS).
It's perplexing as it isn't something one would notice until, for whatever reason, they have to restore their device. At that point that's when they would notice and say to themselves, "hey, I edited that contact and deleted / added blah, blah, blah...".
Frustrating.
