You don't have to include that someone to your contact list in order to email him/her.

You can just simply type the address into the To box.

If you do want to add that person to your contact list...............

To access your main contact list:

Open outlook.com > top left next to the logo Outlook, there is a down arrow > click the arrow > click People > All your contacts are now listed on the left. Scroll down to see each contact.

How to add a new contact to your Contact List :

at the same People window , toolbar at top, click New > fill in the required info > click Save when done > the new contact is now included in your contact list.

If you read my whole post you will see I have no grid. Only the button area under the grid is about two shades darker than the Outlook button bar. Nope, not using Windows 10 either. I'm using Vista and have for over 5 years. Tried different colours and nope not getting the grid or a discernible colour change.

The solution given only applies if are not using Windows 10.

This is independent of the operating system. You are probably not accessing Outlook.com using a browser like Internet Explorer or Edge; it sounds as if you might be using Windows 10's Mail app. If that is the case, then your contacts list is another Windows 10 app called People. To open it, press Windows key  + S, type people and press Enter.

The solution given only applies if are not using Windows 10. I am still searching for a way to put a new contact in. I have tried typing their email address into the To box - this gets the email to that person but does enable you to place them in the contact list

I really feel sorry for anyone who has the slightest problem with their vision or is colour blind as this shaded button would not be seen.

What colour theme are you using? Perhaps you could try a darker one to increase the contrast a bit. This looks pretty clear to me, and my eyesight isn't at all good:

Click the settings cog  to select a different colour scheme.

Admittedly, if you don't know what  signifies, I don't suppose you'd ever guess.
