Using older versions of Outlook for Mac in business environments
It might not be on autoupdate yet (no idea what's holding it up).

My mother's installation of Outlook 2011 has suddenly stopped working. When she tries to run it, the splash screen comes up briefly (like for about a second or less) and then disappears again and the program quits. This is all that it does. It does not display any kind of error message. It just quits. There is a file sitting on her Desktop titled Sent Items.mbox and the Get Info window and icon suggest that this file is connected to Outlook. I assume that this is the file containing her sent emails, but I can’t find where it is supposed to go.
What I am think is that my mom was poking around in folders that she should not have been in an accidentally moved this file out of its correct location and that Outlook, not finding it, is simply quitting. Is this what is happening? Can someone tell me where this file is supposed to go?

The easiest way towards eliminating this annoying occurrence is to simply create a new user account or use Guest Account if you already have one running on your system. Open outlook in the Guest or new User account and Office will attempt to update if is in auto mode. However, you need to know the administrator login detail before you can update components.
Try it, it works 99.99% of the time.
This answer fixed my problem. I did not even need to do step 2 (delete outlook preference). Thanks!
Make sure you select the "Main" identity, not any backups that you will see. I thought that I needed to"roll back" to a previous "identity" to fix it, but it did nothing, the program always start with the latest, main identity, that is the one you need to rebuild! I also noticed that this problem happens, at least to me, when I do a lot of moving of e-mails among folders, it is then a bug that Microsoft should address.
Starting out look with the MAC option key and then clicking to rebuild the data base worked for me.
Thank you
