Teams hogging memory, running slowly

I was so surprised about this. As while we were in lockdown I worked for my former company and I used Teams only on my linux box at home and was happy about it, it worked like a charm (except for background effects). Yeah the old employer had the UYODIHO strategy (Use your own device in home office).

Then I started the new job and the employer gave me a surface pro 7 which was slow and I thought it's the hardware, I was thinking that the magnifier was just too consuming for the integrated gpu. I got the IT to get me the best spec'd surface book they had with the performance dock that has an Nvidia chip in it!

But it still got slow, so I started looking into it only to find out that Teams is the culprit.

It must be the first piece of software from Microsoft that runs better on Linux than on Windows. How ironic. No wait I think the Windows Genuine Advantage program ran even better.

The worst part is, that it hogs the resources in such a way that the magnifier starts dropping frames which means everything freeze for 2-3 seconds but after that it performs all the actions you did while it was frozen, so it is impossible to accurately position the mouse over a menu item! It makes the computer absolutely unusable! They should know that a magnifier that drops frames for longer than 1/15th of a second is the worst thing that can happen and it should have more priority so it does never lock up and it should have an exception handling that it just quits if it encounters an unrecoverable error!

I feel like Microsoft should compensate for all the time I lost in this case and they should pay my employer a new Surface as they invested hoping it would fix the issue for me!

Seems to be fixed for me now. Guess Microsoft released an update that addresses this. My Teams is now using 90-150 MB of RAM and the computer runs normally.

I guess it has been a problem to many people.

Memory is not the problem. Disk access is problem. It is at 100%. Probably you are using non-SSD type HDD.

Avneet - dont get me wrong SSD's are awesome, but teams should not put a HDD to 100% disk usage and upgrading to an SSD may help, but is not a 'solution'

This is a much larger issue with Teams itself.
