outlook error 'copying meetings is not supported' when copying to PST

UPDATE: this only happens with the beta channel release. the standard channel I have on another computer works fine. then another question is... what is the reason behind this change?

hi all, starting this afternoon (october 17) when I try to copy from O365 to a local PST a calendar invite with participants on it (regardless of whether I created or received it) I receive an error message 'copying meetings is not supported'.

the only annoying workaround is to open the occurrence, save it to the desktop, drag and drop it to the PST. not ideal.

until yesterday when drag-dropping the same calendar invite, I would receive a message asking if I want to copy the occurrence or the series, and *poof* done.

OS: win 11 22h2 all updates installed, OS build 22621.2428, experience pack 1000.22674.1000.0, already restarted even though I know it wouldn't solve the issue. nothing in the event viewer.

outlook: it's the company O365 account. calendar fully synced, Windows client, no new version (come to think of it, the 'new version' button disappeared too from the client). Spoke to a mail admin and to my understanding they haven't activated any strange setting today.

PST: tried to move the calendar invite to two different, I am the owner, they are on my pc, permissions are right, files are small so limit size has not been reached.

calendar events: only events (series or standard occurrences) with participants in it are affected. all events created by myself and for myself can be copied as usual.

I checked the release notes and I can't see anything related to this.

so my questions are ... is it a new behavior? can it be deactivated given how irritating it is? any workaround less time consuming than the one above?

    Microsoft's statement about this breaking change:

    .. says that

    "This is an intentional change to prevent copying meetings. Actions related to copied meetings yield unexpected results, so we recommend avoiding copying meetings. This has been a long-standing documented best practice. To limit the unexpected issues, the Outlook Team implemented blocking copying meetings. "

    The right fix is not to stop us from copying meetings, which is something that we decide that we need to do for our own reasons which Microsoft doesn't get to control, but to fix whatever is broken in Outlook which results in copying meetings "yield(ing) unexpected results".

    Jeez. Don't make us conform to your broken software. Fix your sh*t, please!

    If you don't see the subfolders for Outlook\Options\Calendar in Regedit under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\16.0 (you might see 15.0 depending on version of Office installed) then I have a fix that I came up with which worked!

    You might be missing the subfolders because you have Microsoft Office 365 and running classic mode Outlook and not the new one.

    I would recommend switching to the new Outlook (just slide the switch at the top right) and it will quick upgrade you to the new version (which most people don't like for various reasons, I don't like how it forced sorting subfolder alphabetically but I digress)

    Then I would recommend leaving the new outlook running while you run the Regedit editor

    Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\Options\Calendar and create the new key

    EnableMeetingCopy then exit Regedit

    Switch outlook back to the classic version if you want and close Outlook then relaunch it and test copying meetings from one to another calendar and it will work now.

    What a pain in the neck Microsoft. Just give us the option under settings.

    THANK YOU - this worked for me -- and while in list view, a little simpler version of your instructions for me:

    • select the calendar meeting item you want to duplicate
    • hold down ctrl
    • drag it to the selected calendar where you want it

    edited to add: and if you add the field "Created" to your list view and sort by it, you'll find the relevant calendar item right away (assuming it's new)
