Word & Excel: Ribbon > Page Layout > Margins dropdown doesn't display

When I click on the Page Layout tab and click on the margins icon, there is usually a drop down of margin choices. However, when I click on it I get a weird blank/garbled mess. This happens both in Word and Excel.  It also happens if I try to change the margins from the print page.  If I go to the full Page Setup menu the margin settings are okay. This only happens on  the margins list.  It doesn't happen on any of the other lists.

My setup:

  • Windows 10 Pro, version 1903, OS Build 18362.476
  • Word & Excel for Office 365 MSO (16.0.12307.20000) 64-bit
  • Office Insider Program

I have tried the following:

  • Updated Office
  • Updated Windows
  • Ran Office Repair
  • Marked Options>Advanced>Display>disable hardware graphics acceleration
  • Started Excel and Word each in safe mode

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Hi! 

I had the same issue. It seems to have broken with the November 8th and 12th updates. Rolling your version back to the November 1st version 16.0.12228.20020 should correct it for now. Go to Command Prompt as Admin and run - 

"C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\ClickToRun\OfficeC2RClient.exe" /update USER displaylevel=True forceappshutdown=true updatetoversion=16.0.12228.20020

    I also had the exact same issue.  I'm an early adopter, and I was afraid the reversion would kill some of the new functions like XLOOKUP and UNIQUE, but they still work fine and the margin dropdown works as it should.  Thank you!

    That's very odd. I'm unable to replicate the behavior running the same build in either Word or Excel. Can you check to see if you have any video driver updates available?
