Announcing Early Preview of Data Model Diagram for Windows

Greetings from the Visio Team,

We are pleased to announce an earlypreview of the Database Model Diagram (also known as Database Reverse Engineering) as an add-in for Visio, brought to you exclusively by the Office Insider Program.

We are looking for a limited number of participants to give us early feedback on this add-in experience. Listening and learning from our customers is a critical part of our product development. If you have great suggestions, already use Visio or just want to learn more, we encourage you to read on, sign up, and talk to us by posting below.

What will this add-in do?

The Database Model Diagram add-in lets you design a new database model from an existing one, and helps you understand the structure of existing databases, too. 

Database models graphically capture and display key database elements - such as tables and views that are related to each other - making it easy to create, consume and share new and existing databases.

How does the preview work?

The preview is open to all levels of Office Insiders, including Insider Slow and Insider Fast. If you are not a part of the Office Insider Program, you can still get access to the preview by signing up.

Is the preview available in many languages?

Currently it is available only in English (EN-*).

How do I send feedback?

You can send in your feedback in the following ways -

  • Visit Visio UserVoice forum to give suggestions, share your ideas or vote on submitted requests.

I'm new to Visio. Where can I learn more?

I don't have a Visio Pro license; can I still try out the feature preview?

You'll need a Visio Pro for Office 365 subscription to try out the feature preview. Learn more and try Visio Pro for Office 365 from here.

    Hi Raju,

    I got the same issue as maarzt, and I don't know how to send the screenshot to you as the instruction that you gave to Maarzt. I believed that I have the same issue and the cause.

    Please let me know what is the further step to resolve the issue for my work asap, I am stuck. One more thing to mention is, I don't even able to find the "database model diagram" after ran the easy fix.

    updated on Feb 17...

    now i got that problem resolved, however found really slow on dragging the tables to the diagram...and no response sometimes, need to try a few time. I don't think and hardly believe that it is due to my computer slowness, any other issue with the visio for this sort of feature.

    I was very excited to think I was going to finally get rid of Visio 2010, but found out quickly that this solution does not work with Visio Pro no 365.  This baffles me. 

    What is the difference between Visio Pro for Office 365 and Visio Pro no 365 other than the subscription feature.  What is so special about this that makes you not support Visio Pro no 365?

    happy to say that the add in is now working.  I dont know why and how, because I havent done anything since sending my screen shots to the tech team (see earlier) 

    all Ive done to date is generate a schema off of an Access database using the Generic ODBC driver.

    BTW there are only 3 options for drivers in the wizard that the add in invokes:

    SQL server

    Generic

    Oracle.

    not sure what the down sides of this are and wondering if additional "specific" drivers are planned 

    for later versions.

    but for now...looks good and good to have this back.  thanks so much for the team responsible (S S V N Raju etc)

    Hello,

    I have Visio Pro 365 (version 60.0.7329 )

    I installed the add in from https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Reverse-engineer-an-existing-database-into-a-database-model-fb034862-acfc-45bc-88b2-f33d1e1f8614?ui=en-US&rs=en-US&ad=US

    After installing the adding, the template "Database Model Diagram" became available and the add in DbEnginer is loaded.

    Now, the tab "Database" does not show up, so I can't start the "Reverse Engineer Wizard".

    Any idea? Thanks
