PP 16.32 won't save directly to a USB drive, and crashes immediately afterwards

When saving a PP file directly to a USB Flash drive (thumb drive/pen drive etc) PP crashes during the process, and the file saved to the USB drive is unreadable. This happened on 16.30, was fixed by 16.31, but has recurred in 16.32.

I can save the files to an internal HDD, and transfer them to a USB drive without any problem, and the transferred files will open in PP, again no problem.

I am not certain if anyone else has the same issue, but it's certainly a persistent problem for me, one I thought had been fixed with a previous build.

Does this happen in any other Office app if you try to save to a USB drive? Also, is this only with a brand new file? Or does the same happen if you open a PowerPoint file from the USB, make a change, then try to save the changes?

If you could also let us know what build of PowerPoint you are running, that would be helpful. You can find that by going to the PowerPoint > About PowerPoint menu and looking for the "16.32 (xxxxxxxx)" line.

Lastly, if you could use the 🙂 button in the top right corner of PowerPoint to also file a report in app, that will help us capture some diagnostic data which may help in resolving the issue.

Thanks for the reply.

It only happens with PP, excel and Word are fine.

Same thing happens when I open a file from the USB, edit it, then try to resave it, with a new filename, or overwriting the old one.

Current build is: 16.32 (19111100)

Thanks. That was the response when I posted last time, about the error in 16.30. I have saved it locally, and transferred it across for now. My point is that this functionality should be present, and importantly has been in other builds, but not in 16.30 or 16.32, at least on my machine.

If it's something that's fixable, I think it should be fixed. I was told by a previous moderator to post on the insider forums rather than the other ones, to feed back to the developers, hence the post.

Incidentally, reformatting the USB Drive made no difference, PP still saves what appears to be a complete file, crashes, and the file is then un-openable, and un-repairable.

Hopefully the developers will see this feedback, and look into it.

Hi

It's generally not a good idea to save files directly to a USB Flash drive. Instead, save them locally and copy them to the USB drive.

You might use Disk Utility and reformat the USB drive if you want to fix it.
