PowerPoint - Creating a Custom Shape

Hi all, here is the backdrop for my question: I have a slide in PowerPoint that I have put an image over the entirety of the slide to act as the background. On top of the image, I have placed a partially transparent oval that covers the bottom 2/3 of the background image. I want to fill in the upper 1/3 of the slide in a solid color that will cover up the background image without blocking out any of the image that is covered up below by the oval. Is it possible to create a custom shape that forms to the curvature of the top of the oval's line and the top boundary of the slide so that I can fill in that shape with a solid cover without having the new object infringe on the boundaries of the oval?

    Let's forget "Background Image" and call it only "Image"!

    1. Format Slide Background Color with the desired solid color.
    2. Place the Image over the whole slide.
    3. Set the oval shape in place over the Image.

    4. Select the Image plus the oval - by this order - set "Merge Shapes/Intersect"!

    §. Assuming that the initial transparent oval was intended to darken or ligthen the image...

    ***a.*** *Select the "ovalized" image, use "Picture Format" to apply Picture Corrections like - Brightness&Contrast, Transparency, Sharpness, Recolor, etc...*

    Or... Follow steps 1 to 4, add a 5. - Duplicate the "imaged" oval, change Fill to a Solid Color, set desired transparency and place it over the "imaged" oval.

    There are a few technical, better, easier and "more reliable" ways to get the samevisual result, but it would require a deeper knowlege of PowerPoint...
