OneNote desktop version keeps uninstalling

Yesterday (8/24/18), my desktop version of OneNote disappeared -- uninstalled itself.  I reinstalled Office on my desktop (64-bit Insider version), and OneNote desktop was restored.  Today, OneNote was missing again.

What is going on?

Happened to me again  - was on the monthly channel this time - also had lots of corrupted cache crashes, so am uninstalling / reinstalling from scratch.

Hi everyone, thank you for reporting this issue. I can help you diagnose this further if you send mail to tohe@microsoft.com and let me know the following for the PC that experienced the unexpected uninstall:

    1. In your registry, do you see the following path: ‘HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\OneNote’?
      • And under this path, do you see a DWORD key named ‘FirstBootStatus’? If so, what is the Data/Value of this key?
    2. In your Documents folder under ‘This PC’, do you see a subfolder named ‘OneNote Notebooks’? If not, do you recall ever moving the ‘OneNote Notebooks’ folder to another location?
    3. Do you recall running OneNote 2016 at least once on the affected PC since the last time you installed Office or started subscribing to O365 on that PC?

Thank you for your help! My apologies for the inconvenience.

    Best,

    Tony

I'm doing a complete uninstall / reinstall but can tell you that ….

    1.  Can't tell you sorry - ran the office uninstall .cab to completely remove office

    1. Do have the OneNote Notebooks folder in MyDocuments
    2. Yes - had been using it constantly (weeks / months) since installing / reinstalling.

Thank you for this info, gjblack71! The behavior you saw is definitely unexpected, so I'd love your help in digging deeper.

Would you mind grabbing some logs for us so we can investigate further?

    1. Download office365setupdiagnostics.diagcab here http://aka.ms/office365logcollector to your local disk and run it.
    2. Click Advanced and then "Run as Administrator"

    1. After it finishes, send me an email at tohe@microsoft.com so I can give you further instructions offline.

    Thank you for your help!

    Hi Tony,

    Answer to above:

    1. FirstBootStatus REG_DWORD 0x02000202 (33554946)
    2. Yes
    3. Yes

Reinstalled Windows on SurfacePro4 (Insider build 18219) 2 days ago, reinstalled Office365 1 day ago from downloaded ISO and then changed to insider ring. Office updated to latest build. OneNote was there and worked all day yesterday. Tried to launch this evening and it was no longer installed. All other Office apps are still installed.
