Microsoft Office Insert Screenshot Black Thumbnail

When attempting to insert a screenshot into any of the programs in the Office suite, browser windows appear to be black thumbnail and, when inserted, are inserted as black boxes. Is there a workaround to this similar to the registry edit that previously resolved the same issue in Office 2010 (namely: HKEY_CURRENT_USER >Software > Microsoft > Office > 14.0 > Common > AllowImageProxyAuth)? In this instance, I am attempting to insert a screenshot of an Edge window but the results are the same for Chrome, Firefox and IE.

    I had the same problem with inserting screenshots into PowerPoint from Chrome and Edge although it worked fine for IE.

    The thumbnails for Chrome and Edge appeared as black boxes and selecting them inserted a black image into PowerPoint.

    The solution for me was to turn off hardware acceleration in Chrome. To do this open the settings page in Chrome and expand the Advanced section then select System then deselect the option Use hardware acceleration when available.

    You will be prompted to relaunch Chrome then in my case at least the Chrome browser windows become available again with colour and can be inserted into PowerPoint or Word.

    This doesn't solve the problem with the Edge browser, it doesn't have a setting for hardware acceleration that I can see.

    I see this most often if it is not my primary screen when I have multiple monitors. almost always happens when trying to attach a screen shot to a smile/frown face report if my app is on my 2nd screen.

    Ok, so I performed the quick repair and there was no change in behavior. I did notice that IE appears to be working, only Chrome and Edge Canary that are the issue. The problem is that our internal software only runs on Chromium based browsers, like Edge Canary and Chrome. It works fine if I use the Screen Clipping tool, but it will not automatically insert the contents of the browser window.

    Specifically I'm using Outlook, but the behavior is the same across all of the other programs I've tried (Word, Excel, OneNote). I'm on the Insider's Preview 16.0.11916.20000 and have noticed it for several months but never really needed to screenshot a browser window. One of our other users on the stable channel complained about being unable to insert screenshots and is seeing the same behavior as I am, again only for browser windows. I will try a inplace repair and report back.

    Was it all OK before an update or install of some utility?

    The Office component version/Build/Channel is?

    All OK here under 365 business, I just tested the insert screenshot process.

    Have you run an Office inplace repair?
