Some Excel and Word files not opening after latest update for Mac 16.71 (23020100)

After todays update to Office Mac Version 16.71 (23020100), I am unable to open many - but not all - of the Excel and Word files I use. The Apps load just fine, just some of the files are launching and going directly to Microsoft Error Reporting. I can open them in "Preview", I can open them in "Numbers", I can open the on a Windows machine , so it seems the .docx and .xlsx files are OK. They just won't work in this latest version of the Apps. Hope this helps:

    Hi acoustic rider,

Your crash appears to be quite different. I recommend that you ask a new question and be sure to include the build number in your question.

I've just started having this issue in recent days on 16.71 (23031200). I can open Excel files online, so the files themselves don't seem to be the issue. Whether I try to open a file or the app itself, I get a 'Microsoft Excel quit unexpectedly' error and here's the section from the Problem Report describing the crashes:

The "unknown version" aspect of the crash log tells me that there seems to be a mismatch in terms of installation. It's almost as if there are two copies of Microsoft Excel on your Mac, and one copy is trying to use files from the other. That's why I started off with the suggestion to remove whatever is there now.

    I will give a reinstall a try,

Just to clarify, the actual App is working. I can start new Word docs, I can start new spreadsheets. I can open SOME docs and worksheets. It seems about 50/50 as to whether a doc or worksheet opens or goes to the error reporter.

    Hi

The error report suggests that the install did not complete properly:

    Crashed Module Name: libobjc.A.dylib

    Crashed Module Version: unknown version

You should report the crash to Microsoft using the crash reporter tool.

Then, I would do the following to see if the crashes can be fixed:

    1. In finder, in the Applications folder, right-click on Microsoft Excel.app and choose Move to Trash.
    2. Restart your Mac
    3. Empty the Mac OS Trash
    4. Use this installer to install the 16.69 update Excel Excel

Now test. This is the current channel update. If you're still having issues, then I would verify the startup volume, as it would suggest there is something amiss in your file system:

How to repair a Mac disk with Disk Utility

If things are OK with the 16.69 build, then use the Help menu in Excel and choose Check for Updates to get the beta build back and try it out.
