Hi Insiders!
We're now bringing Office 365 groups to Outlook for Mac – it is currently available to Insiders and Production users! (Blog Post) With the first update, you can view your top 10 groups in the folder pane and read/compose/reply to group conversations. We are continually adding new capabilities, and you will see them in future updates.
For those who are not familiar with Office 365 groups, it is a service developed with collaboration in mind. It works with the Office 365 tools you use already so you can collaborate with your teammates when writing documents, creating spreadsheets, working on project plans, scheduling meetings, or sending email. Groups in Outlook for Mac falls under the first pillar and V1 release will enable users to engage with group members right from the group’s inbox and view group conversations with full history without leaving the app. For more info, refer to this page.
If you’re already a member of a group, Groups will automatically appear in the left navigation pane. But if you’re not a member of any groups, join one through Outlook on the Web (Join a Group in Outlook).

Thanks! That would be the issue. Mac Office needs to be activated and signed in with the account that has the O365 license in order to be able to see the subscription features across office. I'll dig up instructions and reach out to you privately on how to change the subscription state.

Hello,
It says “License: Volume License”. However, I am on a college campus and we definitely utilize the full O365 suite. I happen to use both a PC and Mac at my office desk. In the PC environment of Outlook (same email account), my subscription product is Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus.
Should I perhaps be using a different installer in the mac environment?
If it helps, my outlook account is affiliated with the email address that I used to create this post.

Hi Franzo, can you please confirm your Subscription type for Mac Outlook?
Go to Outlook > About Outlook in the menu and one of the pieces of info there says "License:"
Can you tell me what text you see there?
If it does not say Office 365 Subscription, then that would explain why you do not see groups as this feature is for O365 subscribers only. If you do have an O365 subscription for the Mac, please do let me know and I can help with changing your subscription type.
I have made multiple attempts, but have been unable to get Groups to show up in Outlook 2016 for Mac. I have checked for updates and have made sure that I am enrolled in the Fast Track updates. All to no avail. The groups to show up for the same account when using a PC.
