This is very frustrating. Overall, I really dislike the new Excel (16.12). It just screws up the simplest things, including my templates. Same for Word, by the way. All my custom stuff disappeared.
In this case, I create a template and save as template. But unless I go find that file again, it never appears in the "New From TEmplate" view. And when I open that created template, it just opens as a template file, not as a document from a template. It is like the template format is completely useless.
I want to select New From Template and see all my custom templates and open them. This will help me get around the bullcrap issue of excel opening too small on a 27" iMac.
Any thoughts? From a frustrated Office for Mac expert user.

It normally will create a new document using the name of the template, and appending it with a document number. So, if your template is called "Scott TEST.xltx", it would create "Scott TEST1". It would only create "Book1" if the template is called "Book.xltx" or if the default blank workbook template is used.

I do not get Featured or Personal buttons at the top.
Yes, same problem still persists. I cannot access any custom templates. I can find them and open them as normal files, but they open as a template file, not a docx file. And they do not show up under templates when Word OR Excel open.
Well, another tricky question. I just checked in both Word and Excel.
WORD
- The templates are stored in users/[username]/library/group containers/UBF8T346G9.Office/User Content/Templates.
- I checked in Preferences for the template file locations, which also pointed to this folder.
- If I go to the folder, I see my normal.dotm, normalemail.dotm, and two custom that I made (one for this test) (BTW, only Word templates are in this folder)
- If I go to File/New From Template, none of the custom templates show up.
EXCEL
- In Microsoft's infinite wisdom, the Preferences for Excel and Word are wildly different. Excel does not have a "folder location" tab. Thanks, guys. Well done, again.
- If I search for Excel templates in finder, I only find the two I created yesterday, which are in a folder I also created yesterday in "Documents." I cannot find any other templates by name or type. They have to be somewhere!
- So, I don't know the answer to your question. I can't find the default location.
I think I know what your issue is. A while ago when you opened template gallery, all templates would show whether custom or as provided by Microsoft. Here a month or so ago, they have added two buttons at the top of the screen.
Click on Featured and Microsoft Templates show. Click on Personal, and templates you design show, this applies to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Neither Outlook or OneNote uses templates.
