OfficeBackgroundTaskHandlerRegistration flashes a window every hour

Is there a really, really good reason that the "OfficeBackgroundTaskHandlerRegistration" task (see it in Task Scheduler, Microsoft, Office) must run every hour? This is what it says that it does: "This task initiates Office Background Task Handler, which updates relevant Office data."

I ask, because it runs officebackgroundtaskhandler.exe in such a way that it flashes a window (itself) on the screen. Only instantaneously to be sure, but it's noticeable, especially once you catch onto what's happening. You can run the task manually if you want to see it without waiting.

Why doesn't the task use one of the many tricks to hide a window from displaying?

Insider Fast on Win10.

The fix is now available in mainstream builds 16.8210.2075 released on 6/6/17

This issue is fixed starting with build 16.0.8201.2025 which is now available as the latest update for those participating in the Office Insiders Slow program. It will be included in a future update for those not participating in Insiders.

Not sure what time this was put into place but I just Updated Office 365 (Office insider Slow program) [ shows Version 1705 (Build 2801.2075) at 1pm (MST) It appeared to possibly still flicker. I rebooted at 1:32 and will wait to see if it happens again.

Also everyone before spoke of a Officebackgroundtaskhandlerregistration in Task Manager, all I every found was Microsoft Office Click to Run (SxS). Looked in several places Processes, start up, details, services, etc. ??

Sure hope this works. It kicks me out of all full screen applications and when gaming... that REALLY sucks because it causes a crash!

Why does this simple bugfix need to be rolled out to some beta testers program first? We need it now, it is annoying, it interrupts full-screen applications and it generates unnecessary load on the helpdesk.

I have the same problem.. I had significant concern about this window flashing on my screen.. I thought it may be malware capturing screen contents but none of the security software I use could find anything. Nevertheless it still occurred..

Today I found the culprit and I disabled the task entirely. Until Microsoft can fix this for slow ring users I'll keep it disabled. The company needs to employ significantly more effort at testing products before slinging them out to the public. I've wasted a fair amount of my time chasing this problem down and I'm not happy about that or the continuous theft of my time by Microsoft through their buggy and untested products.

I'm not in the Office Insider program either, but we are seeing this now because Microsoft carelessly released this flawed update for Office to us even though Insiders reported the issue back in April. Nice, huh?
