No notification banner or sound on Microsoft Teams desktop app for Mac

I use the Microsoft Teams desktop app on my Macbook. No matter what I do, I cannot get the app to play sound or show a banner for notifications in the app. This problem is being experienced by the other members of my team, who also use the desktop app on Mac.

I am using this version of Teams: Microsoft Teams Version 1.6.00.22155. It was last updated on 2023/08/17.

This is the OS that I’m using: macOS Ventura 13.5

I would love to include screenshots but Microsoft answers won’t upload my images! It says “upload failed” each time, without even partially uploading. Guess what - can’t find the solution to this on answers either. So, here is a written description of what I can see in my settings on the desktop app:

Under settings -> appearance and sound: "show message preview” and “play sound for incoming calls and notifications” are both toggled on.

Under settings -> appearance and sound -> chat: the options for @mention, @Everyone, Messages, and Likes and reactions are limited to “Banner and feed”, “Banner” or “none”. There are no options for sound.

I tried looking at teams.microsoft.com in my browser (Chrome for Mac) to see if I got different settings options there but they look exactly the same as the options on the desktop app.

The banners don’t show up at all and it seems that though I should be receiving sound on notifications, I can’t actually receive that sound? Which is very frustrating. I have a second screen that I work on everyday, so sound is the notification setting that I am most reliant on - if I’m not looking at my laptop screen and don’t see a banner, the notification sound is critical (assuming that the banners for notifications begin to appear, which they currently don't).

I have tried finding a solution to this online and I am having no joy. Please can someone assist me. Also, let me know if you can figure out why I can’t upload screenshots - I tried two different browsers and hard refreshed multiple times. I used different image extensions (.png and .jpg). I then gave up.

Okay well this is embarrassing. It’s a very simple solution.

For all your Mac users, Apple has decided that no app will determine the notification settings. Here’s what you do to fix those settings:

Open your System settings, identified by the cog icon.

System settings -> notifications -> Microsoft Teams

Toggle “Allow notifications” to on.

That’s it. That’s what worked for me. Currently very glad I did not use my name when posting this question.

    Here's what fixed it for me. I had this issue on my Mac too, starting with the "New" MS Teams.

    On Mac OS, open the "Settings" app, navigate to "Notifications" in the left-hand panel, and change the setting to ON for "Allow notifications when mirroring or sharing the display" , as per the picture in this apple stackexchange question .

    THIS is the answer most people are probably looking for.

    System Settings > Notifications > Allow notifications when mirroring or sharing the display (ON)

    Nothing worked for me until I did the following in Teams

    1. Click ...
    2. Click Settings
    3. Click Notifications
    4. Under Teams and Channels, click Custom.
    5. Click Reset to default

    Hi all, i had the same issue, below method worked for me, hope this will help.

    Step 1: Click the Apple icon in the top-left corner on the menu bar and open System Preferences.

    Step 2: Select 'Focus. '

    Step 3: Add Teams and Outlook in Allow Notifications tab.

    Step 4: Select Notifications-> allow Notifications for both Teams and Outlook

    Not sure if this helps, but each channel has it's own notification settings.

    Open the Channel

    On the right panel click Channel Notifications

    it will open Channel notification settings

    Turn on for Channel and Feed for All new posts
