I have the same issue. Unable to register the new Teams app as for Microsoft 365. Microsoft Outlook for Microsoft 365 MSO (Version 2302 Build 16.0.16130.20684) 64-bit. I see that many of us are using different versions of outlook. Is there any specific version which we need to install.

i did notice the new MsTeams IM provider key in the registry did not create. I presume this is what the tick box creates. tried manually creating this which did not work.
My work around for Executives that need the status bubbles back in Outlook is to leave the new TEAMS experience. Once TEAMS classic is back up and running, launching Outlook will show the status bubbles again.
Other posts are pointing to an issue with the HKCU\SOFTWARE\IM Providers key; we will have to wait for the Office/Teams product groups to resolve the issue with NEW TEAMS.
same here... can't register Teams as the chat app in Outlook after updating Teams to the "New" version. (23257.2620.2442.7817)
