I'm in new teams and can't switch to open files in the app rather than browser

Hi there,

I have had issues with old Teams when trying to open a file in the app, it always defaults to open in the browser which makes it hard to edit, then various error messages pop up when trying to open in the default app. From reading help in the community forums, it suggested to uninstall and reinstall. I can now only install the new app which won't even give me the option to try and change my default for opening files and says to use the previous version which I can't find to download.

Please help. I really struggle to properly edit ppt and docs through the browser as some of the functionalities are very limited.

Hello AC_89,

Microsoft is aware of the issue where the option to open files in the desktop app is missing in the new Teams. This could be due to not meeting one of the three prerequisites:

  1. You must be using the Teams desktop app for Windows or Mac.
  2. You need to have the corresponding Office desktop apps (Microsoft Office 2016 or later) installed from the Microsoft 365 portal.
  3. You must have an Office 365 E3 or E5 license.

    Oh yeah...we've moved over to the New Outlook as well (for most users...have some that are fighting the switch - and I don't blame them). Several features not there or working...users hate that shared mailboxes don't appear as a "stand alone" like they did in Classic Outlook and are now under a "Shared with me" section - all mushed together LOL.

    Also, we have several units that created a folder in their Contacts and created contacts in there to collaborate with others - so everyone could update, not just sharing a copy of the list. In Classic Outlook, you can set permissions and grant access. In the New Outlook, those items don't even show anymore. In webmail, they show, but you cannot share, update permissions, etc. MS Engineers have escalated LOL

    I've been investigating this issue lately, we have some users that are able to do this no problem (including myself) and others that can't.

    One thing I've found is those that can't, don't seem to be updating and are stuck on older versions (around 23306.3315.2560.6525 depending when it was installed) than I am and when I fix the updating issue (meaning that the users are then running Teams Version: 23335.232.2637.4844 Client Version: 49/23113028724) the problem seems to resolve. This also looks to affect showing the status of users in Outlook when Teams is registered as the chat client.

    There seems to be some issue with Delivery Optimisation mode being the cause of the update failure as described in the below thread.

    It would be interesting to see what version those that are affected are running elsewhere, and if you have that specific value in the DOMode key.

    I still have the issue where I can open the document in the desktop app by clicking three dots, then open in, then desktop app; but I cannot change the default.

    Well that's possibly ruined that theory. I didn't have a great sample size, but did have 100% success.

    The only other thing that I was looking at was if it's to do with older versions of Office as seems to be implied on a few other forums. I discounted this as I've seen it working on version 2302, 2308 and 2312 as well as various build numbers, but could be something in it for yourself.
