I'm in new teams and can't switch to open files in the app rather than browser

Hi there,

I have had issues with old Teams when trying to open a file in the app, it always defaults to open in the browser which makes it hard to edit, then various error messages pop up when trying to open in the default app. From reading help in the community forums, it suggested to uninstall and reinstall. I can now only install the new app which won't even give me the option to try and change my default for opening files and says to use the previous version which I can't find to download.

Please help. I really struggle to properly edit ppt and docs through the browser as some of the functionalities are very limited.

Hello AC_89,

Microsoft is aware of the issue where the option to open files in the desktop app is missing in the new Teams. This could be due to not meeting one of the three prerequisites:

  1. You must be using the Teams desktop app for Windows or Mac.
  2. You need to have the corresponding Office desktop apps (Microsoft Office 2016 or later) installed from the Microsoft 365 portal.
  3. You must have an Office 365 E3 or E5 license.

    Yes I'm aware of that option but you didn't have to do that in Classic Teams and I also have my settings set to default on open in app in the New Teams and it still opens in browser. What's the point of having the option to set that as dafault if it's not going to work that way? It's just frustrating when you were use to just clicking on it and it would open how you have it set and now you have to go through extra steps.

    Hi there,

    you can open every file manually in desktop app (word/excel).

    If you point on the file and clicking on the three ... you get options for every file.

    First option is "open" and it gives you to choose old good possibilities, even to open in desktop app.

    The question for me is why is this an option in Classic and not in New...?

    Generally the idea is to make improvements with updates not regressions. The option for selecting "Open in app" is still there as a default setting so why doesn't it work like it used to? Taking Excel as an example, both are Microsoft applications so there isn't much excuse not to have a seamless experience.

    Essentially, based on the initial advice from the advisor in this thread, there is no point in updating as the update gives you less functionality than we used to have so why bother at all? Rolling back versions is an annoying workaround we shouldn't have to do as a user, not a fix and doesn't really stand up as advice.

    My advice would be that Microsoft fix bugs and stops putting out flawed updates and patches? Seems like a better idea than us trying to workaround your issues and poor planning.

    Yes this is the dumbest setting. I don't want to open Excel files inside Teams. Come on Microsoft. When I change the default to open in the Desktop app it should open in Excel. Why is this so hard to fix?
