Surface Pro 8 camera issues caused by Teams and New Teams

Hi,

My Surface Pro 8 has always had the issue of the camera not responding after joining a Teams session, then a Zoom or Google Meet session and then a Teams session again. With the new Teams App, the problem is much worst since it manages to mess up the camera by itself; I could be in the middle of a Teams session and the camera just freezes. The problem does not go away until I reset the computer. If I place it on stand by mode, Windows cannot activate the camera when I wake it up, it takes a reset to make the camera work again.

I have seen numerous post from other users with the same problem and all I have read as an answer form Microsoft is to update drivers or firmware. I hav done that multiple times, in fact, I just did again and the problem persists. Will look for a way to get back to the previous Team desktop application to make life bearable for a bit.

I will appreciate any assistance.

Here is all my device info:

I can send you a link to the driver if you wish. Then you have to browse for it.

I upgraded To win 11 as mentioned before, driver updated to 14/6/2023 with the win update, and camera started freezing again.

I then installed the win 10 driver from 2020 and I haven’t had any problems again. I have to say that I just had 3 meetings today, but it’s looking good.

Let me know if ok with you.

    Hola Ciro.

9 times out of 10 it’s another App

I have seen many issues with the front facing camera on SP’s

    Let’s do a few checks.

From a shutdown/restart and after login does Teams automatically start?

Check the system tray to see if Teams old and new are running together..

Do you have Zoom or Google meet installed local or web based?

You can see what applications are using or have used the camera in settings/privacy/camera

On the 18th February Microsoft will make the old team’s end of life.

Worst case we can Google for the latest Surface Pro driver packs and then run the updates.

    You have mention 3 application

Each application if left open while try and keep the video resource.

Make sure all references to Zoom / Google meet are closed.

    Check the system tray.

Close Teams and re open and the resource should return.

    Hi Ciro,

Thanks for contacting us and sorry for the inconveniences,

One solution is to disable the new Teams Public Preview feature, which may not be fully compatible with the camera hardware or driver on your device. To do this, follow these steps:

    • Open Teams and click on your profile picture in the top right corner.
    • Select Settings > About > Switch back to old Teams.
    • Restart Teams and see if the camera works better.

Another solution is to check the privacy settings for the camera on your device, which may have been changed by the update. To do this, follow these steps:

    • Go to Settings > Privacy > Camera.
    • Make sure that the toggle for Allow apps to access your camera is on.
    • Scroll down and make sure that Teams and other video conferencing apps are allowed to use the camera.

A third solution is to update the camera driver on your device, which may have some bug fixes or improvements that can resolve the issue. To do this, follow these steps:

    • Go to Device Manager and expand Cameras.
    • Right-click on your camera device and select Update driver.
    • Choose Search automatically for updated driver software and wait for the installation to complete.
    • Restart your device and open Teams again.

    I hope this helps!

    Regards, Sola
