You're missing the point. We get that it isn't required in order to post. The issue we're expressing is it is visible by default and thus you can't just immediately type and it enter to post. You have to move the cursor to tab to the "body' now AND to "send" now, thus the extra steps now required.

Thus the need to allow the 'user' to set their preferred default -- subject or no subject. To force it on everyone is crazy and out of touch.
Whose idea was it? Please eliminate this!
Some VERY overpaid user interface designer thought this was a good idea. Why would they not ask the people that use the app? What a stupid idea.
