There used to be a toggle to switch off the new Teams so that the Contacts tab showed. With today's rollout it seems to be gone.

I was bothered by this too and then I discovered Speed Dial. Click on "Calls" and on the right there is a Speed Dial pane that shows presence and if you hover over the person it brings up a menu that allows you to initiate a chat or call. It would have been really nice of Microsoft to sync Contacts with Speed Dial.

Based on your post, I checked alongside us and found the same result as yours. Even checked with multiple test tenants and found the same result. It seems that, at this moment, Contact list feature isn't available in New Teams.
New Teams is still under development and it is suggest sending this feature to the Teams development team by go to Help > Suggest a feature. Feedback submitted in this way reaches the product team directly, and they can add future updates. On this point, cooperation and understanding will be greatly appreciated.
Further move back to classic Teams, please go to More Option (...) > Turn off New Teams.

Thanks for the "Speed Dial" suggestion , however this feature does not allow you to group the people in your Speed Dial list,.
Also the feature "Notify When Available" is not available making it onerous to identify when a person is available on a large list of people that is not sorted into Groups.
My company is starting to push us to the new TEAMs but I just discovered it does not have the "contact" list option any longer and this is the #1 thing I use to be able to quickly go do someone or see if they are online (of folks I work with the most regularly).
Has there been any update/movement on this being added back in?
I have reverted to the old teams for now because this being missing.......
If you click on the three horizontal dots on the far left panel below the icons, there is an option to pin "People". This will add your entire Outlook Contacts list. You can then star people to make a favorites list, similar to the previous list we were able to create and access in Classic Teams. There are some annoying features, though. 1) It opens to the full list every time, not the last view you had, so it's an extra click to get to Favorites; 2) It automatically sorts by first name, and if you change it, it resets every time you open the list; 3) When you click on the message icon next to a person's name, a new conversation box opens each time. Because of all of these, I find that it's easier to just type in someone's name as though I'm starting a new message each time. That puts my most contacted people towards the top of my chat list.
