New Teams is not allowing Outlook to display contact status.
If I turn Off "Try the new Teams" and go back to old Teams, then Outlook starts showing contact status.

Here is a potential fix. From the below article about fixing Presence in Outlook it mentions to manually set the registry to "Teams"

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\IM Providers

  • Name: DefaultIMApp
  • Type: REG_SZ
  • Data: Teams

Check your registry, but in my case, I has two entries under IM Providers, so I changed the Data from 'Teams' to 'MsTeams' and that fixed the problem.

I got presence/status working with Outlook 365 (not the new version).

In Teams I had to click on my picture/account in the top right and then click "Sign Out". Then when I signed back into Teams my status started working.

    I had some recent success on this issue. Just in the last day actually!

    We are running Outlook 2016 (64-bit)

    Classic Symptoms:

    Teams classic / Outlook 2016: Presence shows correctly.

    New Teams clients / Outlook 2016: Presence is broken.

    I discovered the following:

    Teams Classic:

    Settings, General, "Register Teams as the chat app for office"

    • This item is selected. If I deselect it, restart outlook. Teams presence no longer works.

    New Teams Client:

    Settings, General, "Register Teams as the chat app for Microsoft 365"

    • This item is not selected, and it does not allow me to check it off to enable it! Of course, Teams presence is not working in outlook.

    My fix:

    Add the following registry:

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\IM Providers\MsTeams]

    "FriendlyName"="Microsoft Teams"

    "GUID"="{88435F68-FFC1-445F-8EDF-EF78B84BA1C7}"

    "ProcessName"="ms-teams.exe"

    I would recommend quitting teams and outlook before applying the reg.

    If you are running 32 bit office, you will need to add the key to wow64

    All I did was opt out of the new teams, then restarted teams and it prompted me to use the new teams again. Then I opted in and that did the trick
