New Teams is not allowing Outlook to display contact status.
If I turn Off "Try the new Teams" and go back to old Teams, then Outlook starts showing contact status.

Here is a potential fix. From the below article about fixing Presence in Outlook it mentions to manually set the registry to "Teams"

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\IM Providers

  • Name: DefaultIMApp
  • Type: REG_SZ
  • Data: Teams

Check your registry, but in my case, I has two entries under IM Providers, so I changed the Data from 'Teams' to 'MsTeams' and that fixed the problem.

I got presence/status working with Outlook 365 (not the new version).

In Teams I had to click on my picture/account in the top right and then click "Sign Out". Then when I signed back into Teams my status started working.

    I was forced over to the "New" Teams today as I got a message on my screen saying that our organization had enabled the new teams so am being moved to it.
    My options were Switch now, or let Teams switch automatically when my PC was Idle. !!!

    So now I ma back on New Teams.

    I do Have Outlook 365 classic presence working, but now I have no Sound notification from Teams for Chats.
    Internet search seems to indicate this is related to my Devices setup where I am using the Laptop internal MIC but using an external Bluetooth Speaker (internal laptop speaker is trash).

    Being forced to monitor chats in my Android cause the forced New PC experience is bad.

    Just an additional note: When I click "Try New Outlook" top right my current "classic" Outlook - I immediately see the presence/status of all my colleagues. My classic Outlook does not show anything. The New Outlook is despicably bad. Most of the classic features is not available in the new Outlook. A simple thing like copy and paste a mail inside another mail is not available. And no PST support. So that is a NO GO! I have tried everything, even edited registry entries - but no luck. What is interesting is that in classic Oulook Under File->Options->People the "Display online status next to name" is greyed out. And YES I have set Teams to be the default IM Chat.

    My application does not have that option. DO NOTE: I did a whole new PC set up from scratch. Meaning I installed teams from the website download. I suspect that option is available when you upgrade from the classic teams to the NEW Teams. A fresh install does not give you that option. Hence asking if there is a calssic install one can download.
