Teams (for work) crashes when sharing screen

Shortly after sharing a screen (within ~15 seconds), Teams will crash.

This happens consistently, and repeatedly -- it is therefore impossible to share my screen.

The crashing began roughly 2 weeks ago -- previously to that, it was working flawlessly.

Related System/Hardware/Settings information:

  • OS: Windows 11 Pro - 22H2 - Build 22621.819
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 7900X
  • RAM: 32GB
  • GPU: Nvidia RTX 3080
  • Teams: GPU hardware acceleration - ENABLED
  • Windows: Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling - ON

Thing I have tried:

  • Reinstalled Teams
  • Disabled GPU hardware acceleration inside of Teams

I collected and analyzed the diagnostic logs, and found the related crash event:

Why is Teams crashing when I share my screen, and more importantly, how can this be fixed?

Same issue on a Dell XPS 15 9500 laptop. Has been screen sharing fine since I've had it (about a year). About a week ago Teams started crashing as soon as I tried to share the screen. Switched off HDR. Can share screen again. 🤪

I'm having a similar issue and it is NOT an HDR setting, but seems to be related to Nvidia's ShadowPlay, screen recording functionality. I can share a screen but if I unshare and share again it will crash 90% of the time. When I restart Teams I also seen Nvidia's shadowplay restart with a notification at the top right part of the screen.

I have Shadowplay set to NOT record continuously (instant replay) and I'm not doing a manual recording so just running in the background is causing a problem with Teams.

I'd killed all Nvidia processes running on my box (Windows 10 x64) and now I don't have any crashing sharing with Teams so there is definitely a conflict between these 2 services.

It worked. I disabled the HDR button in Display settings.

I had the same issue since I started working on my new laptop.

It turns out the issue was caused by the HDR-setting of my screen. It's set to be on by default by Windows 11, but when sharing screen in Teams this caused a crash. Sharing the screen is OK the first few seconds, until you switch to show another app, as you do by alt-tabbing during presentation.

So change the setting to 'off' in your W11 Display Settings when you present in Teams.

I hope this'll also help MS track and fix the issue, because not having HDR enabled makes the picture quality noticably worse.

I can confirm this is indeed an issue. This past week when I shared screens Teams would crash. Was working flawlessly prior to that. I did as Jeroen suggested (after doing the uninstall/reinstall and then stumbled upon this thread) and BAM! It works perfectly now. Only bummer is with HDR turned off, my screens look like **** compared to what I'm used to, but I can now share screens again without Teams crashing.

@Microsoft - please fix this bug!
