The latest version of NEW TEAMS, lets you change the notification sound. There's not a lot to choose from, but at least we're not stuck with the default now.
I have the same problem since some Teams App update, I start to hear default built-in Teams chat notification together with the Windows sound notification although I have set to use only Windows notification style. It is annoying also to my colleagues in office, because when laptop has locked screen and I am not at the computer Windows notifications do not play sound (which is correct), but Teams built in notification sound is still played every time I got chat from someone (and I am in a big company so that is quite often).
When it started to annoy me I tried to revert Teams to previous version (located in folder C:\Users[username]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Teams\previous), but the issue was not resolved, probably before I attempted to fix it, the Teams was already updated twice, so I no longer have the previous version where notifications were working properly (that is to use Windows style with only sound set in Windows sound setting).
So I agree that this should be a feature, but just want to mention a side note regarding your assertion that 99% of corproate devs use MacOS. This is just demonstrably untrue. There are lots of sources for an OS breakdown, but the annual StackOverflow developer survey is probably the most comprehensive of professional developers.
Here's the breakdown of developers' primary professional use OSes from last year's survey:
Windows: 48.82%
Linux: 39.89%
MacOS: 32.97%
BSD: 1.03%
I recognize you said "corporate use" instead of professional use—but to be as generous as possible to MacOS and to use one of the lesser-biased data sets possible, I chose to use these measuring "professional use", because surveys of corporations tend to favor Windows significantly more.
Personally, I'm grateful to be able to do much of my dev work in Linux (coding .NET, no less!), though I don't mind using any of the 3 choices. Just had to point out the bad data.

this thread is about how dumb Microsoft is by removing the option for Mac users to choose a different or custom "ding" tone when receiving messages.
remember, it's us (all of us) against Microsoft's stupid decisions that cause us problem
I get confused whose teams message it is, when both me and my husband are working from home and I am away from my laptop a bit. It would have been very convenient to have a different sound to identify which one our's ping it is.
