The latest version of NEW TEAMS, lets you change the notification sound. There's not a lot to choose from, but at least we're not stuck with the default now.
What happened to Teams? ...
They moved Teams functionality into the cloud when it became New Teams, that's what happened.
Based on Jeremy_see's answer, my guess is that the message to sound a notification doesn't go to the Teams client at all, but to a separate process (Windows Shell Experience Host) which appears to ignore the User's System Volume settings.
If that guess is correct, then that's the component which needs fixing. Currently its name seems to be missing its second 's'.
This is a huge problem. Why is Microsoft not responding to this. The person in charge of settings needs to be immediately terminated. This is unacceptable practice that 30 year old tech is not apart of the "NEW" TEAMS. How can you not allow the users functionality to change notification sounds. WHY WILL YOU NOT RESPOND, this is unacceptable, many people have stated this is a deal breaking issue.... FIX IT.
They are working on it but won't respond until they have a clear "uplifting" answer as to not show or admit there is an unresolvable problem. If they do respond, they will guide you through a series of never-ending troubleshooting that is irrelevant to the issue.
So frustrating. This is still true for New Teams. I have a tough time hearing the default Teams incoming Chat notification sound. I need to be able to easily hear that when I'm 15 feet away from the computer (for example during lunch) and the volume is set to 100%. This is an accessibility issue. We need to be able to select a specific WAV file for that sound.
