The latest version of NEW TEAMS, lets you change the notification sound. There's not a lot to choose from, but at least we're not stuck with the default now.
I have the same problem since some Teams App update, I start to hear default built-in Teams chat notification together with the Windows sound notification although I have set to use only Windows notification style. It is annoying also to my colleagues in office, because when laptop has locked screen and I am not at the computer Windows notifications do not play sound (which is correct), but Teams built in notification sound is still played every time I got chat from someone (and I am in a big company so that is quite often).
When it started to annoy me I tried to revert Teams to previous version (located in folder C:\Users[username]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Teams\previous), but the issue was not resolved, probably before I attempted to fix it, the Teams was already updated twice, so I no longer have the previous version where notifications were working properly (that is to use Windows style with only sound set in Windows sound setting).
On mac, you can change the "Notification Style" from Teams-default to "Mac". That switches the design of the notification to macOS and also the sound to the familiar mac-notification-sound. Which, can be changed in your mac's System settings.

Well isn't that just peachy of them! I had messages silent, just phone call sounds until this week. Now I might have to mute everything. Thanks :)
I found this in another forum about this issue:
"You can't change them because they're embedded into other DLL files. Unlike older Office applications, Microsoft doesn't produce individual sound bite files anymore."
