Microsoft Teams and Apple Airpod compatability

Hi - I use Microsoft Teams regularly (many times a day) to conduct business meetings.  I very recently bought a pair of Apple Airpods (Pro) as my old plug-in headphones stopped working after several years of service.  I run Teams on my Macbook Pro laptop.

Unfortunately, I can't get the Airpods working with Teams.  People in the meeting can hear me perfectly, but I can't hear them.  I'd appreciate it if somebody could offer some advice on how to get this configured.

Thanks.

I'm having the same problem with Teams and AirPods Pro

I'm using them paired with a MacbookPro, they work perfectly with other platforms (Apple and non Apple like Webinar software), but every time I use Teams the connection drops after some seconds.

During some tests I noticed that it is more stable by switching the Mic from Airpods to the internal Mic on the Macbook - this inside the MS Teams application.

But this is not necessary true every time. It seems that the more people are on the meeting (from 5, 6 persons up) the more problems the bluetooth connection have.

Is there a microsoft representative on this community that can advise and explain to us all ?

I see lots of people with the same issue - but no technical explination OR any plan to fix.

I'm not a Microsoft rep, but here's what I know....

== Airpods with Teams on Windows ==

Bluetooth headsets (including Airpods) typically come with drivers, these are files that allow windows to talk to them and allow sound/voice/data to pass between windows (and applications like teams ontop of windows) and the headset. They are often automatically downloaded by windows without you knowing.

If a bluetooth headset manufacturer (like apple) doesn't provide specific drivers for their device (airpods) then windows has a built-in generic driver in windows that will do the best job it can with the random headset device. I noticed on my windows machine that the generic driver wasn't actually doing a great job with airpods, I was getting mono audio (not stereo) when i was using the microphone, sometimes it would just not work, I would get stereo audio if just using the speakers part of the airpods. The Bluetooth standard has what they call "profiles" that a bluetooth device can support - "Headset profile" is for phone calls (i.e. microphone and earphones working at same time), "Headphones Profile" is for listening to music. When an application like Teams starts, it will ask windows to find audio devices that fit one of those profiles (obviously teams asks for the audio devices that support microphone, so the airpods come up (as they support "Headset profile" via the generic driver). I noticed that the generic windows driver did ok at supporting the second profile for music, even though getting the airpods to pair with windows was spotty.

The generic driver sucked at switching between profiles, say from listening to spotify to going to teams to have a call. It sucked at pretty much anything to do with the Headset profile to be fair. This is not microsoft's responsibility in my opinion though, the generic driver can only do so much to support lowest common denominator bluetooth headsets, and airpods are special in a variety of ways (noise cancelling, feedback suppression, etc). I think what we really need is a specific driver for airpods on windows FROM APPLE. Now, its possible that windows IS using some automatically downloaded driver from Apple, in that case APPLE should fix the driver to work better, but my guess is they don't have a high incentive to make their airpods work well with someone else's operating system (windows).

== Airpods with Teams on Mac ==

Yeah, this is 100% in Microsoft's court in my opinion, other voip apps work on MacOS with airpods, Teams doesn't. Please fix!

I just bought my husband a pair of airpods as he has so many teams meetings from home. They arrived today and we  were so disappointed that Teams do not allow them to work properly. There is no way to control the volume and it is way too loud.  I can't believe this  is an issue and I now realise many people have found the same thing.  Seriously - are microsoft doing anything to address this besides telling us to buy the ' approved' ear phones???? That is ridiculous.  They airpods work in all the other applications except the one we need them to - Teams.  I hope this gets fixed very soon. Not happy , Microsoft . :(

This is a great detail and consistent to what I've experienced on the last months

The problem that I see is between the switch of profiles, and mainly regarding the microphone. But not only that, but also switching from headset and audio/listen to music only.

The question that makes me think this is a Teams issue, is that everything else works.

I may be listening to music, a call enters and I can take the call on the same Airpods not changing a thing -> I notice that the bluetooth profile changes because the sound changes tone.

As soon as I enter a Teams, the Airpods begin to cut and after a while, or if it's a call with several persons (I don't know if it's due to different channels or due to more bandwidth being used) it cut off completely and they loose bluetooth connection

It goes until all of the bluetooth (mouse also) crashes.

I thought it was a Macbook problem. But on another computer, on Windows 10 and HP Elitebook, the behavior is similar
