Can't open files from Teams in Office desktop app

I've been using MS Teams to work with PowerPoint and Excel documents with the option Open in desktop app. Until a few weeks ago  when I try to open a document with the option open desktop app I get the launching window of the app (any office app like Excel, Powr Point, Word, etc.) but it doesn't start anything. This is with all the files I try. I haven't made changes to my settings or anything. I have tried to clear the cache in the Teams Folder and I have checked that the apps are linked to the right file types but nothing works. I also have looked on the official site for help and in this community but I can't find any fixes that solve this.

    hello, I got the same problem but also with PowerPoint. The url: open with file was not connected to Ppt and Ppt could not be added. 

    Then I did a Microsoft Repair - look elsewhere on the web for simple instructin. After a repair, the connection was there again and it works again. Pfoeh.

    So one of my teachers suggested using this because weve tryed everything but so my problem is my teams page so i can see when my teachers assign something but when i try to open it or download it etc it says something went wrong and i shut everything down and logged out i tryed everything and my teacher suggested this we tryed everything else though so if you can get back to me asap

    I have exactly the same problem, and when I try to choose Excel, Word or Access in Settings > Apps & features > Default apps > Choose default apps by protocol I'm not allowed to pick them as they do not appear despite being installed:

    What do you suggest?

    My students have all the same problem as you've described, Dave. 

    I've read the answers of Marvin, and it's typical nonsense; uninstall, reinstall, check version, get updates. This is clearly a problem with Microsoft, but instead of addressing the issue AND getting someone who actually knows what's to be done, you get someone following a list of suggestions, which, by the way, is the same for all problems related to the Microsoft suite and rarely works.

    I'll keep looking for a solution and get back to you when I can.

    I just had the same issue for a user, and, interestingly, this issue is related to cached browser data (the URL protocol involved with the default MS-WORD app setting):

    It may affect one or more office programs (in my case, it affected Word, but not Excel).

    To test whether this is browser related:

    1. Switch your default browser to something different (ie, from Chrome to Edge).
    2. Fully exit Teams.
    3. Reopen MS Teams and confirm if you can open MS Office files in-app.
    4. If that resolved the problem, but you want to go back to your original default browser, just reset that browser to its defaults and delete any cached data (example: rename C:%username%\appdata\local\google to google.old).
