Can't open files from Teams in Office desktop app

I've been using MS Teams to work with PowerPoint and Excel documents with the option Open in desktop app. Until a few weeks ago  when I try to open a document with the option open desktop app I get the launching window of the app (any office app like Excel, Powr Point, Word, etc.) but it doesn't start anything. This is with all the files I try. I haven't made changes to my settings or anything. I have tried to clear the cache in the Teams Folder and I have checked that the apps are linked to the right file types but nothing works. I also have looked on the official site for help and in this community but I can't find any fixes that solve this.

Here's the problem I had (which I think is the same as everyone else):  User used to be able to open documents inside of the Teams desktop application.  This was isolated to one Team and not others.  If one double clicked on any of the files, they would open outside of Teams and in Office 365.

Cause:  The user changed their View and did not include the "Type (icon linked to document)" column.  Adding that back fixed the issue.

I had the same kinds of issues and was frustrated at not being able to open the docs in app. I tried to follow these threads and solve it myself, but could not figure it out. I think my problem may have been related to multiple accounts. I finally went online to microsoft customer support chat. After a couple of attempts I seem to have gotten the right person who remotely took over my computer, figured it out and fixed it. I don't know what they did exactly, but it worked and I have not had a problem since. So if you are really stuck... go to the online support chat and ask to speak to a live person. If the first person cannot help you then try another.

    Hi Marvin,

I have exactly the same problem, and when I try to choose Excel, Word or Access in Settings > Apps & features > Default apps > Choose default apps by protocol I'm not allowed to pick them as they do not appear despite being installed:

    What do you suggest?

    Thanks!

    Carlos

I am having the same problem. All of a sudden I cannot open any docs from teams on my desktop. Has any solution been found other than reinstalling microsoft office?

Not exactly sure why they hid it this far, but I think I found a solution that worked for me. Once in Microsoft Teams, click on the document (Word, PPT, etc) you would like to "Open in App." From the document toolbars, go to File => Info => Open in App. This will launch a new window where you'd be required to associate this document with a Microsoft account. Type in your MS account user name or the email you used to open the MS account and then the password associated with that account [Hint: better use the credentials for the account currently logged in]. You will have to repeat this for all the different types of documents (Word, PPT, etc). The good news is, as long as you are logged in using this account, these credentials will be associated with the document, so you don't have to enter the email and password every time you want to "Open in App." The only reasonable explanation why this happens is if you have multiple MS Teams accounts- one for work, school, personal, etc. The default account (eg Work) is typically set up to automatically associate the documents with the default account, but once you have a second, etc accounts, MS Teams needs to know which account to associate the document with. That's the only logical explanation I could think of. [Note: It seems that the procedure above won't work if you are using a work or school computer wherein you don't have admin rights. The default work or school account would "Open in App" just fine without any issues, but to associate a second account with a document, it appears that you need admin rights.]
