Show Background effects option has disappeared on teams application, how can I get it back?

I had the option to turn on "show background effects" during a MS teams meeting.  It was working great.  Then one day the option is gone and all I can do is turn on blur.  But other users in my company are able to use the feature.  I logged into a Staging tenant to test and the option is there but when I go to  my Companies production tenant it is not available.  But it is for other users.  Microsoft has not rolled out any MS Teams controls around the background so not sure how my setting is missing and others have it.

%appdata% should take you to Roaming.  The full path would be:

C:\Users<userid>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Teams

We could figure out which files are making the feature available again.

You have just to copy:

  • desktop-config.json
  • settings.json
  • storage.json

You can proceed as follows:

  1. Close MS Teams completely
  2. Copy the above listed files from a machine of someone who has the feature working (%Appdata%\Microsoft\Teams or C:\Users<userid>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Teams)
  3. Paste the copied files in your %AppData%\Microsoft\Teams and replace the existing files
  4. Start MS Teams and wait until you got an error message where you can click on "Sign out"
  5. Log-in with your email address

Thank you for your reply I appreciate the info although I have no experience to be able to uninstall citrix receiver software, I am a novice computer user. Just think when you have software the maker should rectify known issues when they happen although that doesn't seem to be happening at this point. Thank you again for the help I do appreciate it.

I have a ticket about this problem open with microsoft as well. The background effect button on my PC wass not there when I started teams, but the button was there after I have changed the device settings back and forth.

Solution for me was to uninstall the Citrix Receiver software I had installed on my PC. Luckily I do not need it right now so this is not an issue for me.

Looks like Teams does not like Citrix Tools to be installed even though they are not actively used at the moment...

My ticket with Microsoft is still open, but we have figured out some of the issues.  The biggest issue we have identified is Microsoft will not allow feature updates if you are running over VDI.  This is understandable because there may be performance issues over a VDI connection.  However, we were are not actively using VDI.

We are seeing the issue on laptops typically connecting over VPN.  We were getting the Teams version updates, but the new features would not show up.  This was the case for backgrounds, background options, and all the new meeting experience features.  They continually told me that it was because the VDI flag in the Teams settings was enabled, but could not identify what was specifically causing the flag to be enabled.  We do have Citrix Remote PC installed on the laptops for situations where the employee would leave the laptop in the office and needed to remote into it from home.  Thinking this was the "VDI" they were were referring to, we uninstalled it, but the issue continued.  We finally found we had to  uninstall all Citrix software (including Citrix Remote PC and Citrix Workspace), run a program to scrub out all references to Citrix, and uninstall and re-install Teams and run the "check for update" within Teams, to get the features to all appear on one laptop.

Currently, I am waiting for Microsoft to explain why we cannot have any Citrix software installed on our computers and get the updated Teams features.  I would understand if we were wanting the Teams features while actively connecting to a virtual desktop environment, but we are not.

I have also asked, if we do all this on all of our laptops and then re-install Citrix, will the features get disabled again on the next update (I think we all expect this to happen based on our experience). I have also requested they give admins a little more control on making features available to our environment (and the ability to push out features).

I know this post is very specific to our environment setup, but wanted to keep everyone up-to-date with my ticket and hope it helps identify what is causing the issue for your environments.
