Whenever I open the app they ask "How would you like to appear on Teams?" After continuing always getting failed to update... Missed so many meeting due to it and still no solution. Tried creating a new account but it's the same.

Cool, it works for me finally, so strange.
delete your phone number in your account information (via web), remember when sign-in again to teams, you must delete all previous file in %AppData%\Microsoft\teams and cancel the request to enter phone number (by skip) have fun
[SOLVED] As suggested by the guys above, here is how I did it.
- logging into Teams(either web or desktop shows the same issue), the pop-up shows up, can't update the info.
- Go to MS account while keeping the pop-up there, delete the phone number in the account.
- Back to Teams, click Retry. It works!
It seems to me that Teams cannot override the phone number (could be other fields in your cases) in the db.
